short pencil lines in margins on about 10 scattered pages, spine top frayed, slightest mustiness, still good brown cloth with some light wear and scuffing, better than a reading copy. LAID IN: broken pieces of dust-wrapper, including the front flap text with some interesting content. BOUTON, S. MILES. And the Kaiser abdicates : the German revolution, November, 1918 - August, 1919. With the constitution of the German Commonwealth translated by William Bennett Munro and Arthur Norman Holcombe. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1921, Second edition, revised and enlarged Sept. 1921, 332pp., . The author (page 14): "Much of the history told deals with matters of which the author has personal knowledge. He had been for several years before the war resident in Berlin as an Associated Press correspondent. He was in Vienna when the Dual Mon archy declared war on Serbia, and in Berlin during mobilization and the declarations of war on Russia and France. He was with the German armies on all fronts during the first two years of the war as correspondent, and was in Berlin two weeks before America severed diplomatic relations with Germany. The author spent the summer of 1917 in Russia, and watched the progress of affairs in Germany from Stockholm and Copenhagen during the winter of 1917-18. He spent the three months preceding the German Revolution in Copenhagen, in daily touch with many proved sources of information, and was the first enemy correspondent to enter Germany after the armistice, going to Berlin on November 18, 1918. He attended the opening sessions of the National Assembly at Weimar in February, 1919, and remained in Germany until the end of March, witnessing both the first and second attempts of the Spartacans to overthrow the Ebert-Haase government." - Jacket flap: "Mr. Bouton presents a picture of chaotic Germany - the picture of an eyewitness who has experienced much and then retired from the scene of action to think it through. The result is a generous portion of carefully sifted information, presented in a delightful manner. The German Revolution was conceived, agitated, and carried out by the pro letariat. The "little man" played the big role and it is this "little man" of the lower and lowest classes whom Mr. Bouton knows so well. He is intimate with him because he has completely mastered his language and is thoroughly conversant with his daily life. The book leaves the impression of a carefully arranged gallery of pictures. This revised edition ends with a chapter on the German constitution in which Mr. Bouton explains some of its more important features. There is also included a translation by William Bennett Munro and Arthur Norman Holcombe of the constitution.". …

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical factors that led to the collapse of Imperial Germany in the wake of World War I. The author analyzes the structure of the German government at the time, with its emphasis on authority and obedience. Particular attention is paid to the role of the German officer corps as the backbone of the monarchy and the fatal cancer of socialism that weakened the state from within. By examining the interplay of internationalism, nationalism, and growing social unrest within the German population, this book provides a nuanced understanding of the factors that brought down one of the most formidable empires of the time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
