But he details the results of the McManus Cork Project begun with a few experimental cork tree plantings in 1940 and how the project had grown to include extensive plantings in 27 states. But as of a few years ago, Portugal remains the largest exporter of cork and the US is usually second after France in the amount of cork imported.
