The author points out that for 2,300 years the world's supply of cork had come from Europe and North Africa. But he details the results of the McManus Cork Project begun with a few experimental cork tree plantings in 1940 and how the project had grown to include extensive plantings in 27 states. But as of a few years ago, Portugal remains the largest exporter of cork and the US is usually second after France in the amount of cork imported.
