Stassen congratulates Agnew on his Chairmanship of the Maryland delegation to the Republican National Convention in Miami. He sends Agnew a copy of the statement Staasen is to present to the Resolutions Committee at the Convention on July 29th in case Agnew might want to refer to it. If it turned out to be "appropriate and agreeable for me to meet with the Maryland delegation, I would be glad to do so". He pens a P.S. "You made a lot of sense at Cincinnati!". [Agnew gave a speech at the National Governors' Conference in Cincinnatti, Ohio on July 23, 1968]. Stassen's statement concerns the Vietnam War. He believes it was a big mistake for Johnson and Humphrey to get America so deeply involved in the war and sets out his ideas for how the country should be extricated from this crisis.Harold Stassen [1907-2001] was an American politician who was the 25th Governor of Minnesota. He was the leading Republican candidate for U.S. President in 1948 and considered for a time to be the front-runner. Thereafter he ran for president numerous times, including in 1968, as well as for other offices, and gained a reputation as a perennial candidate.
