Un halo de leyenda envuelve su prematura desaparición, cuando…apenas contaba veinte años. Justo después del crack bursátil del 29, decidido a llevar una vida sencilla, y con la sola compañía de un sol implacable, sus ansias de absoluto y sus burros, Everett Ruess se retiró del mundo, en pos de experiencias y de la belleza suprema que le servirían de inspiración para sus poemas, sus ensayos y sus xilografías. En 1934 desapareció misteriosamente en las soledades de los desfiladeros de Utah. Hasta nuestros días apenas ha llegado el retrato con el que lo inmortalizó la fotógrafa Dorothea Lange, así como un puñado de pinturas y textos, entre ellos, las cartas que escribió a sus familiares y amigos, y que son el testimonio único de su anhelo de libertad y, sobre todo, de su extraordinaria comunión con un paisaje indómito hecho de cañones vertiginosos, barrancos escarpados, altas mesetas y ríos salvajes. En estas cartas, asistimos al dibujo de una vida intensa y sin ataduras: seguimos las lecturas de su autor, admiramos su determinación, comprendemos su aversión por la civilización y la urbanidad ?«siento desazón al pensar que las personas son marionetas conducidas por fuerzas invisibles que las gobiernan»? y sufrimos con los infortunios que le depara el trato con una naturaleza a veces despiadada.
