"Es ist nicht zu leugnen, dass Rostgaards inniger Forscherdrang zum Zeitpunkt seines Todes keine großen Ergebnisse hervorgebracht hatte" ("Det kan ikke nægtes, at da Rostgaard døde var det ikke store resultater, hans varme kærlighed til forskningen havde bragt", E. Holm, in Dansk Biografisk Lexikon, Bd. 14, S. 344). Seine vorliegende Gedichtsammlung ist von dieser Wertung allerdings auszunehmen, sie hat ihre Bedeutung als Zeugnis neulateinischer Dichtung in Dänemark bis heute bewahrt. - Es liegt nur Band 1 vor, Band 2 fehlt hier. (80), 577, (3) pp. + frontispiece (4), 618 pp. Uncommon first edition of this first anthology with contemporary Danish poetry in Latin. Frederik Rostgaard was born at the Krogerup estate in North Zealand. Upon his father's death in 1684, he was orphaned, but the financial situation was good, allowing him to receive a thorough education and higher education. After staying with the rector of the Copenhagen School, Peder Foss, he was privately tutored by him in 1687. He had Willum Worm, later a justice of the Supreme Court, as his guardian. Being wealthy, he pursued various independent studies, enjoyed visiting libraries, and began, as a very young student, to collect the works of Bording and other Danish poets, especially those in Latin. After a few short trips to Scania and Northern Germany, he traveled abroad in 1690, where he stayed for the next nine years. He first stayed in Germany, especially in Giessen, where his main study was jurisprudence, but he also studied Arabic at the same time. In the spring of 1692, he traveled to the Netherlands, making Leiden his main residence, and although he did not abandon law, it was linguistics that occupied him for the remainder of his stay abroad. It was during this trip he saw the opportunity to publish his collections of Latin poems by Danish authors. Den trykte version er derudover forsynet med det enestående rytterportræt af lovens giver, Frederik III. Kongeloven, enestående i europæisk retshistorie som eksempel på en fundamentallov under et enevældigt monarki, blev holdt hemmelig fra 1665 på grund af dens bestemmelser om arvegangen i kongehuset. Dens enevoldsbestemmelser indgår i Christian V's Danske Lov af 1683, og hele teksten blev læst op ved Christian V's salving i 1671. Pragtudgaven blev skænket som gave fra Frederik IV til en lang række inden- og udenlandske fyrster samt rangspersoner og dansk-norske institutioner. Gaveeksemplarerne optræder i tre forskellige typer indbindinger: Rødt fløjl, rød maroquin samt brunt kalveskind, alle med rig forgyldt dekoration med Frederik IV's monogram. En restbeholdning af eksemplarer opbevaredes i materie i Geheimearkivet, og dette eksemplar er et af dem.
