Giano Nicio Eritreo, (15771647) was an Italian poet, philologist, and historian. This seventeenth-century full-vellum volume contains Rossi's "Iani Nicii Erythraei Documenta Sacra" as well as "Iani Nicii Erythraei Opuscula Spiritualia Tria" (1648) and "Homiliae" (1649) bound into the volume. The work contains engraved portraits, vignettes, and page ornaments. Three title pages. Full-vellum sammelband is solidly bound with raised bands and stamped gilt lettering on the spine. There is moderate external age/wear. The pages and engravings show mild toning and scattered light marginal foxing. A very nice copy of these three works.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe bringt in 3 Teilen ca. 300 Biographien von italienischen Humanisten und Persönlichkeiten der Renaissance, darunter Aldus Manutius, Torquato Tasso, Scipione Gonzaga, diverse Strozzi, Belisario Bulgarini, Christophorus Bronzino, Franciscus Bracciolinus (Poggio), Galileo Galilei, Tommaso Campanella, Christophorus Clavius, Francisco Toledo und Fulvio Orsini. "Pinacotheca imaginum illustrium" ist Rossis Hauptwerk, es erschien zuerst 1643, erlebte zahlreiche Auflagen und gilt als eines der frühesten Beispiele der italienischen Literaturgeschichte. Der im Buch fehlende Porträtstich wurde durch eine Kopie auf altem Papier ersetzt. Auf der Titelei wurde das Pseudonym von alter Hand nicht ganz richtig aufgelöst "Johannis Victoris Roscii". Der auf dem letzten Blatt im Kolophon erscheinende Christian Götze "Typis Christiani Goezi[i]" ist als Buchdrucker in Leipzig von 1682 bis 1708 nachweisbar. - VD17 3:307284N.
