Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Offering original New Zealand perspectives on the Irish Revolution from the third Home Rule crisis to the establishment of the Irish Free State, this collection explores the political, social, and cultural evolution of Ireland from 1912 to 1923.Interrogating rare and previously untouched primary sources, the contributors capture an array of New Zealand outlooks, from the experiences of soldiers who visited Ireland during World War I to the views of local Irish nationalists. New Zealand's contribution to the global movement for self-determination for Ireland and its participation in the Irish Race Congress in Paris are explored. Reflections on the poets of the Easter Rising, engagements with Irish modernists, and the impact of Cumann na nGaedheal and Cumann na mBan are investigated. Shifts during the decade in the associational life of Irish migrants, their children and grandchildren are analysed. Cultural memory is illuminated in an account of how a Catholic newspaper fostered a collective understanding of Irish history and contemporary events.New Zealand's Irish Revolution examines the dominion's relationship with Ireland, discussing notions of 'home', diaspora, identity, and belonging, and reveals new details about the lives and ideas of Irish residents and their descendants. A fresh and thought-provoking collection that will enhance our understanding of the Irish Revolution and its broader international impact through an Antipodean lens. New Zealand's Irish Revolution a fresh, thought-provoking collection that will enhance our understanding of the Irish Revolution and its broader international impact through the lens of New Zealand. The essays examine notions of 'home', diaspora, identity, and belonging in the lives and ideas of the Irish and their descendants. paperback. Secondhand. On St Patrick's Day, 1922, Bishop James Liston made a speech at the Auckland Town Hall. He intended to reassure his flock about recent events in Ireland, which appeared to threaten the Anglo-Irish peace established a few months earlier. The half-hour speech was greeted with fervent applause by his largely Irish-Catholic audience. A quite different reaction awaited the "The New Zealand Herald's" report of the event which had Liston sneering at the British Empire, praising the dead Irish rebels, and describing the Crown forces as "foreign murderers". Calls were made for the Bishop's immediate deportation, and he was soon charged with making a seditious utterance. Liston became the first Catholic Bishop in the British Empire to be tried for his political opinions, and faced a two-year jail term if found guilty. This work tells the story of this episode in New Zealand's history, one which highlights the ethnic and religious tensions that were a feature of colonial life. It presents a picture of the Catholic community wrestling with its troubled Irish heritage, and with issues of assimilation and identity in the hysterically pro-British atmosphere of 1920s New Zealand. 1997, First edition. An ex-library copy in very good condition.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. 172 pages. cover worn, Little has been written on Trinity College?s role in Easter Week 1916 as a ?loyal nucleus? dividing the insurgents and providing an effective counterwe ight to rebel headquarters in the GPO. This book reveals how five New Zealanders , acting as the core of a small squad of colonial troops, provided a vital shiel d to protect Trinity from capture. Had the College fallen to the surprise attack launched on it by the rebels at midnight on Easter Monday, its 324th year may w ell have been its last. Letters written home by the New Zealanders give fresh in sight into important aspects of the insurrection and allow us to test some contr oversial claims against both Trinity?s own record and the various rebel accoun ts. More importantly, they help to answer questions left unasked in previous stu dies.…
