Hardback. Condición: Good. Tracing the path of one of the world's leading experts on sharks and marine life, Eugenie Clark: Marine Biologist provides career information on marine biologists and divers through this exciting story. Eugenie Clark, nicknamed ""the Shark Lady,"" is one of the world's most famous marine biologists and leading experts on sharks. After expressing an interest in aquatic life as a child, Clark pursued studies in zoology during the 1940s, a time when opportunities for women in science were limited. Clark's hard work and determination have taken her around the world on countless diving and research missions, allowing her to meet with royalty, work beside other leading scientists, and even ride on the back of a whale shark. Although Clark has retired from her teaching post at the University of Maryland, she continues to dive and conduct research on various species of fish.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. An NCS Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People Christopher Columbus is one of the most famous people in world history, yet few know the full story of the amazing, resourceful, and tragic Italian explorer. Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration for Kids portrays the Admiral of the Ocean Seas neither as hero nor heel but as a flawed and complex man whose significance is undeniably monumental. Kids will gain a fuller picture of the seafarer's life, his impact, and the dangers and thrills of exploration as they learn about all four of Columbus's voyages to the New World, not just his first, as well as the year that Columbus spent stranded on the island of Jamaica without hope of rescue. Students, parents, and teachers will appreciate the in-depth discussions of the indigenous peoples of the New World and of the consequences of Columbus's voyages--the exchange of diseases, ideas, crops, and populations between the New World and the Old. Fun hands-on activities illuminate both the nautical concepts introduced and the times in which Columbus lived. Kids can: Tie nautical knotsConduct a blanket (silent) tradeMake a compassSimulate a hurricaneTake nautical measurementsAnd much more.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. In 1905, twenty-six-year-old Bill Reid, a former Harvard athlete, was wooed back to the campus by the offer of a salary higher than that of any faculty member and approaching that of long-time president Charles W. Eliot. His mission: beat Yale. With the intent of providing a how-to manual for future coaches, Reid set down day by day an account of his activities on and off the field. In so doing, he provides clear evidence of what many have suspected for a long time: that the unethical conduct so common in modern-day football has roots in the early history of the game and has not been limited to the so-called football factories. Reid offhandedly discusses such topics as spying on other teams, pressuring faculty members to give players passing grades, requiring that players cut classes to attend practice, and hiding injuries from players to keep them on the field. By coincidence, Reid kept his diary during the single most inflammatory year in the history of college football. In the fall of 1905, President Roosevelt called a White House conference, attended by Reid and the coaches at Yale and Princeton, to discuss brutality and unethical conduct in college football. Harvard was among a number of institutions that considered dropping the sport in 1905, and a few actually did, including Columbia, California, Northwestern, and Stanford. After the death of a Union College player, a national conference was held to discuss the future of college football, which resulted in the formation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.…
