Ich bin dement, na und?, ist ihr Motto, wenn sie von ihren Erlebnissen mit Nicht-Dementen berichtet. Da sind etwa die Psychiater, die öffentlich bezweifeln, dass sie unter einer Demenz leidet. Oder die Angehörigen sozialer Berufe, die sich im Umgang mit ihr überfordert fühlen. Und die Nachbarn und Freunde, die hilflos stammeln: Du Arme, bist Du jetzt auch dement! Mit Scharfsinn und einer gehörigen Portion Humor hält Helga Rohra der Gesellschaft den Spiegel vor. Sie zeigt, wie unbeholfen wir Menschen mit Demenz gegenübertreten. Und wie wenig wir ihnen dabei gerecht werden. "Nach dem das Arbeitsamt mit einer 54-Jährigen Demenzbetroffenen wie mir nichts anfangen konnte, wurde ich zum Integrationsfachdienst geschickt. Die Sachbearbeiterin dort, hat sich meine Story angehört und gerufen 'Damit müssen Sie an die Presse. Na so ein Fall. Das hab ich noch nie gehabt!' Ich habe sie unterbrochen: 'Presse? Ich will nicht an die Presse. Wissen Sie, was ich möchte? Ich möchte, dass Sie mir helfen irgendwo wenigstens drei Stunden am Tag unter zukommen. Ich will noch nicht in Rente gehen.' Die hat mich aber nicht etwa gefragt, was ich machen könnte oder was ich machen will. Es kam nur die lapidare Aussage: 'Eigentlich ist das sehr schwer mit der Integration. Es gibt nichts. Wir haben eine Wirtschaftskrise. Und warum wollen Sie das den überhaupt?' Worauf ich entgegnete: 'Ich fühle mich noch zu jung. Ich habe doch noch Ressourcen und ich will meinem Leben einen Sinn geben.' Und da kam die Reaktion: 'Arbeiten Sie halt als Ehrenamtliche. Da kriegen Sie zwar nur einen Kaffee, aber Sie haben Ihren Sinn.'" "Helga Rohra hat eine Demenz - ohne dement so zu sein wie man sich das vorstellt. Sie könnte sich Helen Merlin nennen, sich verstecken, aber tut das nicht. Ihre Demenz mit Lewy-Köperchen liegt irgendwo zwischen Alzheimer und Parkinson. Ihre Geschichte nimmt vorweg was vielen noch bevorsteht: Frühdiagnose ohne Ursachenbehandlung; mit der Erkrankung selbstverantwortlich möglichst gut zu leben - ohne naiven Glauben auf ein Wundermittel."
