Läsuren. - With the continuously increasing production of agricultural products following the intensive cultivation and specialization of the various crops, plant protection has gained in importance. This applies to the temperate zone and, even in a greater measure, to tropical and subtropical regions. Depending on the system of farming, measures of crop protection are included in many different ways in the process of agricultural production, but it is the economic value of the individual plant that frequently governs the extent of the control measures to be taken. In tropical regions, the cultivation of field crops such as cassava, yam, sorghum, maize, etc., is limited to certain areas and is relatively uniformly distributed within the given area. By contrast, banana, cacao, coffee, tea, etc., are grown in plantations over large areas, where there is concentration and specialization of production. This concentration of economic plants has led to an increased incidence of pests, because in this way pests find optimum conditions. Thus, it is small wonder that the plantation system of farming makes high demands on crop protection, because the most favourable conditions for an epidemic-like outbreak of diseases and spread of pests are to be found in plantations; evidence of this fact has already been given by numerous disasters in the past. Examples are the Panama disease of banana in Central America, the swollen-shoot virosis of cacao in Ghana, the Hemileia rust of coffee in Asia, Cercosporiosis of banana in Guinea, sereh disease in sugar cane in Java, etc., which have had severe consequences for the whole economic life of the countries concerned. This book tries to offer a synoptic representation of diseases and pests in tropical and subtropical crops, including their control, and thus to fill a gap in a field of technical and scientific literature which has been neglected so far. This seems to be important because due to the multiplication of relations with national states and overseas countries of tropical and subtropical regions, problems are raised which concern various spheres of economy and which have to be solved before long. In order to assist in the solution of these problems, the members of a special Working Group "Protection of Tropical and Subtropical Crops" have compiled this book on the basis of results of tests carried out in the tropics and of intense studies of comprehensive literature. We hope that this book will form a basis for further investigations and research and help underline the importance and necessity of crop protection and thus contribute towards the introduction into practice of efficient control methods.
