In the rear are lists of the hotels' amenities and prices, with useful information for tourists on consulate, banks, etc. There is a brief, illustrated piece about the semi-feral cats that live in the Savoy's basement.

The cloth darkened at the backstrip and margi…ns of the upper and lower boards, and with just a touch of light wear to several extremities. Some very light toning to the free endpapers, and the half-title and one unprinted concluding leaf somewhat more toned. A very good copy in a splendidly preserved example of the uncommon pictorial dust wrapper designed by Rex Whistler, non-price-clipped and just lightly spotted at the rear panel with a touch of toning to the spine panel. Contributors include John Betjeman, Lord Berners, Harold Nicolson, Dorothy Wellesley, Lord Alfred Douglas, Edmund Blunden, James Laver, Sylvia Pankhurst, H.J.Massingham, Rose Macaulay, Robert Byron, Nina Hamnett, J.B.Morton, Evelyn Waugh, V.Sackville-West, E.M.Delafield, Raymond Mortimer, J.C.Squire and twelve others. James Laver contributes a five-page reminiscence of the two-year period he and his sister lived with their maternal grandmother following the death of their mother, although whether his familial presentation inscription enhances the value is perhaps open to debate.

Bound in full leather stamped "Stanley" with shield and eagle decoration on the front cover, with wear to the extremities. The spine has been expertly rebacked in full leather to match the original. The hinge of the pag…e containing the Stanley photograph has been repaired almost invisibly, not affecting the photograph or the text. There is minor to moderate foxing scattered throughout. With the exception of the list of persons present, which is affixed to the inside front cover, each page is mounted on thick card stock. There are five photographic portraits of the officers of the Advance Command of the Expedition, each of which is signed by the officer in the top margin above the photograph. The book is additionally signed on the front and rear endpaper by 23 attendees of the banquet event. The text includes the menu of nine courses served on May 30th, 1890 including "Babas a la Stanley" for entrements. It was a lavish event, held in the Portman Rooms, with the Band of the Grenadier Guards played 10 songs. At this event, Stanley was presented with a massive testimonial shield and medallions wrought in fine silver by Elkington & Co. The shield was designed by Henry Solomon Wellcome, who apparently organized this banquet event. Wellcome's new tabloid medicines in the form of "nine beautiful chests replete with every medicament necessary to combat the endemic diseases peculiar to Africa" accompanied the expedition, and there were several pharmaceutical colleagues in attendance at the event.
