The Hungarian authorities considered these men unworthy of bearing weapons, yet they demanded they take part fully in the "blood sacrifice" that was the war against Stalin and his forces. Some 80% of the Jewish forced laborers never returned home. Vanaf de bezetting werd de mannelijke joodse bevolking van Nederland van de getto's naar werkkampen gestuurd. Niek van der Oord herschreef een indrukwekkend overzicht met nieuwe gegevens van overlevenden en brieven, wat men in het Engels zo mooi forgotten voices noemt. Het was door de Duitse bezetter zorgvuldig uitgedacht. Eerst de joodse mannen isoleren in de werkkampen. Op 2 oktober 1942 werden de werkkampen tegelijk leeg gehaald. Het in angstige spanning verkerende thuisfront werd na razzia's in de steden eveneens naar Westerbork gebracht. De door de Duitsers verkondigde gezinshereniging duurde slechts enkele dagen. Wat resteerde, was een enkele reis richting de vernietigingskampen. Niek van der Oord sprak het handjevol joden dat vijfenzestig jaar na dato nog over het leven in de werkkampen kan vertellen. Onder meer hun verhalen zijn opgetekend in dit boek dat talrijke authentieke brieven, foto's en documenten uit de werkkampen bevat. 777g.…
