Stapled format. 28pp. From item: One of the more widely recognized virtues of the American way of life has been its "official" national philosophy, as set forth in the First Amendment of the Constitution, that "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." Throughout America's history an independent and competitive press has been regarded as essential to the effective maintenance of her republican form of government. It was the press's responsibility to provide factually the news and information necessary for the maintenance of a conscious and alert citizenry. The obvious importance of this task, and the inherent power and prestige which accompanied it, quite naturally resulted in a recognition of, and a respect for, the institution of journalism in America. American journalism's enormous capacity to organize and arouse public opinion for or against anything or anyone, and also the constitutionally guaranteed immunity from the threat of governmental restriction and suppression, elevated the press to a coveted plane of influence which was appropriately termed the "Fourth Estate." The American press of today is a far cry from that which existed in the days of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine. The revolutionary technological advances which the newspaper field has undergone in the last century have been profound.Today the size, material quality, and format of newspapers, as well as the ability to provide a metropolitan area containing hundreds of thousands of readers with several editions a day, would certainly amaze the Founding Fathers. Yet, despite this advance in newspaper technology, they would probably be shocked by the growing monopolistic centralization of American newspapers and disgusted by the kind of managed news which is being presented with a straight face to the American people.

First Edition. 1962. 190pp. "Four white men, who think differently on almost every subject and who detest one another, are the only Europeans living in an East African backwater. David Irving, a thwarted and disillusioned man, has been District Commissioner for twelve years. His companions are a brutal policeman who had been thrown out of the army; a drunken doctor; and an old game warden. The four men seem to wage a desperate battle of nerves, each trying to destroy the others in order to obliterate his own sense of futility. Then there is of course the tribe - in this case the wild, treacherous and undisciplined Galla, who are believed to be holding a barbarous ceremony, Gadamoji, encouraged perhaps by the dangerous activities of the Godna Duba. The climax of the book is the trial of this man on a charge of witchcraft. The white men believe their duty is to convict him, but what if the evidence is inconclusive?" Book and unclipped jacket are in excellent condition with no inscriptions.

Fine condition blue boards, dark blue cloth spine, and silver spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote, ECCL. 9:10; Prologue: The Day I Owned the Sky; Epilogue: Goals, the Past, and the Future and Index. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. Signed (twice by the author), inscribed, and dated by Robert Lee Scott, Jr. with thin black ink on the blank first free front endpaper. "The charismatic author of God is My Co-Pilot - continuously in print since 1947 and an inspiration to generations of flyers - writes a firecracker of an autobiography, a story alive with humor, excitement and the brash honesty that made Robert L. Scott a maverick in the Air Force and, indeed, for all of his life. In a richly generous account of his background and career, he writes of his family's patient forbearance with their son's determination to become a flyer - including the hair-raising episode of young Robert's first flight in a human-powered glider in a leap off a neighbor's roof, and his much later, absolutely last-ditch battle to get into the fledgling U.S. Army Air Corps. Concurrent with the grueling training that followed, Scott set himself to pursue - and won - his beloved lady, Kitty Rix. Once officially accepted by the Air Corps, he seized every opportunity to fly, volunteering for all kinds of extra duties, including danger-filled airmail runs in the dead of winter. By the time World War II broke out, he had built up an astounding number of flying hours, and, desperate to get into combat, was able to talk himself into the Pacific bomber command - though he had never actually flown a bomber (the closest he had come to any bombing experience was hand-dropping watermelons from a fighter plane in the California desert). But Scott was first, last and formost a fighter pilot - and he proved it from his first day in the combat zone of the Burma-China Theater. With Chennault's famed Flying Tigers he earned a reputation as a one-man air force, recording twenty-five kills by the time he was removed from that theater of battle. He writes with utter frankness of his bitter fight with one of Chennault's detractors; much of his subsequent sojourn in the Pentagon was devoted to extraordinary, and certainly extracurricular, maneuvering designed to get adequate weaponry out to the beleaguered command he had had to leave in Buma. Scott's all-out approach to living is the basis not only of his lifelong love affair with flying but of his characteristic commitment to walk the entire length of the Great Wall of China - an ambition achieved at the age of seventy-two, disguised for a good part of the way as an unlikely six-foot-three Georgia-born Chinese. He is a man whose whol life has been, and is, an adventure, from that early leap off a roof, to his motorcycle journey through Europe and halfway across Asia (following Marco Polo's old route), to flying his latest supersonic Air Force jet when well into his seventies and very long after his so-called retirement. He is a man who has always followed his dreams and spoken his mind. His autobiography is rich with the frank anecdotes of a flyer and a man reveling in the challenge of living. Full of vitality and driving energy, Robert L. Scott's story is a testament to the guts and endurance that go into the making of a great fighter pilot." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Signed by Author(s).
