Añadir al carritoHardcover (Quarter Leather). Condición: Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 1st UK Edition; xii, 326 pages, illustrated, 116 illustrations from photographs including 4 photogravures. Original quarter leather binding. Shelf wear, some foxing and age toning to pages as expected, contents clean. NOTE: Captain Peary photogravure is a trimmed photocopy, 2 of the other photogravures although original are also trimmed and laid in. Odd collation, frontispiece is North Pole, and there are no page numbers for the photogravures, these have been added in pencil. The MAP is an amateur PHOTOCOPY. The books has been collated and the illustrations are all present. Sold as a Reading Copy and priced accordingly. One of two London editions dated 1910, the other issued by Methuen; priority is unclear. Both London editions have a greater number of illustrations than the first (U.S.) edition, but the sixteen special plates are printed on cream rather than white paper stock, and are in black & white. Following earlier attempts, Robert Peary succeeded in reaching the North Pole on 6th April 1909. Immediately after his return, controversy broke out due to Frederick Cook's announcement, just 4 days before Peary's, of his own attainment of the Pole on 23rd September 1908. The North Pole contains no hint of the ensuing - and often acrimonious - debate concerning these competing claims. At the time, Peary came to be regarded as offering the surer claim. Cook's own published account, My Attainment of the Pole, did not appear until 1911 and inevitably appears more 'embattled' than does Peary's relatively straightforward account. This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 2 kilogram. Category: Arctic & Antarctic; Exploration. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 2678. This book is extra heavy, and may involve extra shipping charges to some countries. …

Añadir al carritoCondición: Near Fine. First American edition, first printing. xxxii, 373. 9.5" x 7" BATTLE FOR THE NORTH POLE Robert E. Peary set out for the last horizon of polar exploration in 1909: the North Pole. The constantly shifting sea ice challenged even Peary's experienced crew as their dog-sled teams struggled to carry 50 men to an impossible-to-mark spot. To Peary's horror upon their return, rival Frederick A. Cook announced his discovery of the pole. the year before! Both men rushed to publish newspaper articles, research papers, and book-length accounts. Presented here is Peary's report, which, backed by more thorough scientific documentation, ultimately cemented him in American history as the discoverer of the North Pole. However, it is likely that neither reached their goal-missing the North Pole by just a few miles. [Arctic Bibliography 13230]. Lightly rubbed extremities, couple small spots of soiling cloth, else near fine. Overall tight and internally clean. Publisher's full navy cloth pictorially stamped in gilt, white, grey, and red, teg. 100 illustrations from photographs, eight in color with fold-out color map by Gilbert H. Grosvenor bound in rear. Hodder and Stoughton, 1910 1 fort volume in-4 (26 x 20 cm) de 326 pages. 116 illustrations photographiques. First english printing.

Añadir al carritoFirst British edition of Pearyâs illustrated account of his journey to the North Pole. Thick quarto, original cloth with a polar bear and gilt titles to the spine, gilt titles and disk to the front panel, double ruling to the front panel stamped in white, a polar bear in white to the rear panel, tissue-guarded frontispiece, profusely illustrated with a large folding map printed in color, 3 photogravures, 16 special plates, and 97 illustrations from photographs. Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt. In very good condition. This dramatic account includes the preparations, organization, and the march to the Pole. "According to Peary, they reached the Pole on April 6 and remained there 30 hours to verify their position. They reached land again at Cape Columbia on the 23rd, and two days later arrived at the ship⦠Immediately after Peary's arrival, the Cook/Peary controversy broke out as a result of Cook's almost simultaneous announcement that he had reached the Pole one year earlier. Eventually, Cook's claim was rejected as fraudulent by most commentators, and Peary's priority was widely acknowledged. However, Peary's claim, too, has frequently been questioned, and controversy continues even now⦠The National Geographic Society commissioned a new examination of Peary's route by the Navigation Foundation, of Maryland, which reported in Peary's favor" (Holland, 475). …
