Dark red cloth rubbed, spine's gilt stamping remains bright but with slender patch of dj's spine paper adhered at heel with slender moisture staining shallowly overlapping into adjacent board corners. Dark brown top edge; moderate toning to fore-edge with light toning to bottom edge. Front endpapers toned from two newspaper and one magazine laid-in obituaries regarding Will Percy; past owner's name/address label affixed upon front pastedown; light toning to rear endpapers; slight rippling to frontispiece leaf. Interior pages remain fairly clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy in only a good dust jacket. With frontispiece portrait of the author with facsimile signature plus Foreword by Roark Bradford. A posthumous complete compilation of Percy's poems from SAPPHO IN LEVKAS AND OTHER POEMS (1915), IN APRIL ONCE (1920), ENZIO'S KINGDOM (1924), and SELECTED POEMS (1930). Heir to one of the great Mississippi planter fortunes, William Alexander Percy (1885-1942) is perhaps best known for his autobiographical LANTERNS ON THE LEVEE which is ripe with reminiscences of life in Greenville and the Mississippi Delta. However, Percy was also an accomplished poet, a graduate of Harvard Law School, a World War I veteran, and second cousin of novelist and essayist Walker Percy. Based on the 1930 Pulitzer Prize winning play by Marc Connelly, based in turn on "Ol' Man Adam an' His Chillun," a 1928 collection of pseudo African American folk tales by Roark Bradford. One of only a handful of films to feature an all-Black cast made by a major Hollywood studio during the Golden Age, becoming the highest grossing such film, and remaining so until surpassed by "Carmen Jones" in 1954. 9.5 x 7 inches.
