If you are going to India and plan to visit the Taj Mahal, and thinking about other interesting sites nearby, you may wish to consider Fatehpur Sikri, located not too far away and one o…f the country s named World Heritage Sites. I wasn t really aware but of course, Wikipedia filled me in about the site (please see the excerpt below). I am very pleased to be able to offer a small hard cover book, titled simply: Fatehpur Sikri, by Saiyid Athar Abbas Rizvi. This small hard cover book (5 ¾ x 8 ½ inches, 97 pages) was published by the Archaeological Survey of India in New Delhi, dated 1972 and apparently a First Edition according to my online research. The book is bound in black cloth boards with gilt titles on the spine. The book is nicely illustrated with 10 b&w plates and three fold-out plans of the site. Herewith a short excerpt from Wikipedia (with my thanks): Fatehpur Sikri is a city in the Agra District of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city was founded in 1569 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, and served as the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585, when it was abandoned. After his military victories over Chittor and Ranthambore, Akbar decided to shift his capital from Agra to a new location 23 miles (37 km) west south-west, to honour the Sufi saint Salim Chishti. Here, he commenced the construction of a planned walled city, which took the next fifteen years in planning and construction, with a series of royal palaces, harem, courts, a mosque, private quarters and other utility buildings. He named the city Fatehabad, with Fateh, a word of Arabic origin in Persian, meaning "victorious." It was later called Fatehpur Sikri. It is at Fatehpur Sikri that the legends of Akbar and his famed courtiers, the nine jewels or Navaratnas, were born. Fatehpur Sikri is one of the best-preserved examples of Mughal architecture in India. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean, perhaps ever so slightly dust-dulled but really nice as are the gilt titles on the spine. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates clean and bright, from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
