Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Scientific Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: University, Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-ouzou (Department of English), language: English, abstract: This article seeks to analyse Samuel Butle…r's satirical treatment of Victorian institutions and values in Erewhon (1872). It focuses on the function of the utopian genre to account for the ideological struggles that inform society, and its capacity to suggest cures to social ills. Taking its theoretical bearings from Paul Ricoeur's Lectures on Ideology and Utopia (1975) and Karl Mannheim's Ideology and Utopia: A Sociology of Knowledge (1932) it attempts to explain why Butler faces the difficulty of reflecting objectively on a society in which he was culturally immersed; In describing this difficulty, Ricoeur uses the expression 'Mannheim's paradox' to refer to the ambivalent intersection of ideology and utopia in utopian thinking. A symptom of this ambivalence in Erewhon, as we argue in this article, is the resort to satire not only to mock and make a clean sweep of the values of Victorian society in compliance with the work's utopian impulse but to re-establish those same values on firmer ideological basis by resorting to carnivalisation.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-ouzou (Department of English), course: Littérature comparée (Africaine et Britanique), langu…age: English, abstract: This paper is concerned with the issues of mimicry and hybridity in two novels belonging to two antagonistic periods in contemporary literary history: the colonial and the postcolonial literatures. It explores through the genre of juvenile fiction the way Ayi Kwei Armah's The Healers (1978) grappled with the legacy of Rudyard Kipling in terms of cultural and educational frames of reference. In effect, we postulate that, not only is Armah keen to distance his narrative from the far-reaching political and cultural implications inscribed in the colonial project of mimicry, but he is equally eager to take full advantage of the abrogative and appropriative thrusts inherent in the hybrid discourse in order to formulate a sense of identity and purpose that is new and native.Résumé:Cet article est une étude des questions de la mimique (mimicry) et de l'hybridité dans deux romans appartenant à deux périodes littéraires contemporaines antagonistes : la période coloniale et la période postcoloniale. 24 pp. Englisch.
