This book delves into the harrowing events of the 1797 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia, offering a chilling yet insightful glimpse into the struggles of a city grappling with a devastating public health crisis. The author meticulously recounts the outbreak's progression, detailing the escalating fear and panic as the death toll mounted. Through vivid descriptions and firsthand accounts, the narrative paints a poignant picture of a community in disarray, highlighting the desperate measures taken to contain the disease, the heroic efforts of medical professionals and volunteers, and the profound impact on the city's social and economic fabric. The author explores themes of resilience, compassion, and human fallibility, exposing the stark realities of a society grappling with inadequate medical knowledge and limited resources. This historical account serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity, and the critical importance of public health infrastructure and preparedness in safeguarding communities against infectious diseases. Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. Three volumes. Octavo in fours (21cm); contemporary full sheep, blind-tooled at board edges; red gilt morocco spine labels, stamped volume numbers to spines; 494,576,477 + Index [131pp]. First volume with old stains to board edges and a shallow loss to leather at crown; else light external rubbing and wear, with a few strips of flaying to leather; internally quite fresh, with just scattered foxing to a few gatherings in v.I. Early ownership signature ("T" or "S Belton") to endpapers. Overall a tight, fresh, Very Good set in an early, likely original, American binding (we note that the bindings on practically every set documented in commerce over the past two decades have been uniform to this one). The third volume, though dated 1796, was printed no earlier than 1797 (per Evans). First edition of the first collected edition of the laws of the United States, containing the entirety of the acts enacted by the first four Congresses as well as the texts of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, etc. As noted by William Reese, the ".set is also important as a collection of early American treaties.including the treaties of the United States with foreign powers and Indian tribes.the official printings of these treaties are rare in the extreme.[and] in most cases.this set represents a very early (sometimes just the second) American printing." Printed by Richard Folwell, with his colophon advertisement to each volume. Zephaniah Swift's substantial (131-pp) Index serves as a complete abstract of the work, and includes within its text a separate section titled: "Detail of Specific Articles of Import, on which Duties are Payable by Law, with the Specific Rates of Duty." EVANS 32973; REESE FEDERAL HUNDRED 63.
