Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. An American Revolutionary War document: A crew signed agreement for a neutral trading ship to travel to French occupied St Kitts in 1782.  MONSTER-ROL OF THE TRADING SHIP DE VRIENDSCHAP (THE FRIENDSHIP). An original printed and manuscript crew agreement (Monster-Rol) for the Imperial-flagged merchant ship De Vriendschap, led by Captain Ole Lindwed, for a voyage from Ostend to St. Kitts during the American Revolutionary War. Ostend, 4 July 1782. Large sheet approximately 340 x 210 mm. Original printed broadside completed in manuscript on both sides. The recto bearing the printed articles of agreement beneath the large engraved Imperial double-headed eagle, completed in manuscript with the details of the vessel, captain and voyage. The verso forming the crew register, recording the names, occupations, birthplaces and monthly wages of the crew, each man signing beneath his own entry, or, in one case, making his mark. Old folds as issued, light age toning and occasional edge wear, otherwise an about very good, complete example. An uncommon survival documenting the engagement of the crew of the merchant ship De Vriendschap under Captain Ole Lindwed for a voyage from Ostend to St. Kitts, dated 4 July 1782, only months after the French capture of St. Kitts during the American Revolutionary War. The document records the vessel sailing under the "Keyserlyke Vlagge" (Imperial Flag), reflecting the neutral status of the Austrian Netherlands during one of the most complex periods of eighteenth-century Atlantic commerce, and the contentious issue of neutral flags. The printed text constitutes the contractual obligations of the officers and sailors, setting out their duties aboard ship, discipline, conduct, wages, provisions and penalties. The reverse records the individual members of the crew, including their occupations, places of birth, monthly pay and receipts for advance wages. Particularly appealing is the survival of the crew's own signatures beneath their respective entries, together with the mark of one illiterate sailor, transforming what might otherwise have been an administrative record into a direct record of the individual men engaged for this wartime Atlantic voyage. The master is identified as Ole Lindwed of Mandal in Norway, while much of the crew originated from Scandinavia, including Sweden and Norway. As Britain, France, Spain and the Dutch Republic contested control of Atlantic trade, Ostend emerged as an important neutral port whose Imperial flag enabled merchants to continue commercial voyages which might otherwise have been interrupted by wartime restrictions. St. Kitts itself had become one of the principal strategic prizes in the Caribbean following its capture by French forces in February 1782. Original maritime documents connecting identifiable vessels, named masters and crew with the wartime Atlantic trade are increasingly difficult to obtain, particularly those preserving both the contractual text and a complete crew register signed by the participating officers and sailors of a voyage conducted during the closing phases of the American Revolutionary War. Signed by Author(s).…

An early appeal under the landmark pension act of March 18, 1818, the first federal legislation extending lifetime pensions to needy Revolutionary War veterans who had not been disabled in service. Benjamin Wilcox, a former lieutenant in the Rhode Island Continental Line, had applied almost immediately after the law's passage, submitting his claim before a Newport judge in late March. Nearly five months later, having received no response, he wrote directly to Secretary of War John C. Calhoun: "To my great disappointment [I] have heard nothing of it since. If lack of evidence has been the cause, I think I should have heard so. But this was deemed hardly possible by my friends after having given in one of two commissions that I have the honour to have held & such other evidence of services, poverty & inability to obtain a livelihood, from old age & weakness as the law appeared to require." The new program attracted far more applicants than anticipated, forcing Congress to tighten eligibility requirements in 1820. Calhoun himself reported to Congress in 1823 that the War Department had not kept count of pension applications until August 1818, the very month Wilcox wrote demanding to know what had become of his claim. . Old folds, light toning and minor marginal wear. Very good. Manuscript letter, one page on a folded sheet, signed in Wilcox?s name by Thomas Williams as agent. 7 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches.…

Dated Eagle Pass, Texas, November 14, 1916. From Fred Hetzel of the 14th U.S. Cavalry to his friend George Allen of Minneapolis, keeping in touch, describing his recent army life. "I like the Cavalry fine, George, and have advanced very well. I am taking an exam for a non-commissioned officer.you have heard about the trouble I suppose.I ride 120 miles every 5 days along the river from one ranch to another keeping a lookout for smugglers and cattle rustlers. I have been in a few scrapes along the line and was shot in the knee last May but have since recovered. The country hare is very wild, you don't see a ranch but about once in every 30 miles of hard travel.I have shot plenty of game such as deer - duck - antelope and never run out of chow.the weather here is fine, it never rains and we never wear an overcoat.I remain as ever Pvt. Fred Hetzel, Troop G, 14th U.S. Cav. Eagle Pass, Texas. Two conjugate leaves, 4 pages, folded for mailing. With the original mailing envelope - on the back is printed "Troop G, 14th U.S. Cavalry". 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with traces of mount, and red wax seal, adhering to the reverse of the second leaf, which is franked (the franker's name and signature illegible) to 'Sir John Phippart [sic] | &c &c | No 8 New Burlington St'. Slight loss to one corner of second leaf, from breaking open of seal, with damage to one word of text. The recipient is the naval writer John Philippart (c.1784-1874), and the address is in fact that of the publishing house of Colburn and Bentley, publishers of the Naval and Military Gazette of which Philippart was the editor. The letter, which concerns a contribution to that journal by Dundas, begins: 'Dear Sir | I shall send in a few days another conclusion to your journal which I think you will deem better worth insertion than my foregoing one. It contains the battle of Fuentes and some matter immediately succeeding'. Dundas hopes that Philippart will find room for the piece in the number for March, and explains that it will take at least as much space 'as the Artle you mention to be in the Jany No and which has not come to hand'. In a postscript he asks, 'If it is not a secre[t,] Pay who is [binded?] whose opinion in my respects coincide with mine?'.…
