Añadir al carritoNinth Edition. 21 x 14 cm. xv, 551 pages. Later fine polished calf. Dark blue and green spine labels. Gilt titles and decorations. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers. Binder Stamp ('Bound by Bayntun Riviere Bath England') on verso of front free end paper. Near fine condition. Minor shelf wear, rubbing and bumping. Joint and hinges started to crack. Internally bright and clean. Thomas Robert Malthus (1766 - 1834) was an English economist, cleric, and scholar influential in the fields of political economy and demography. One of the most important and influential works in the history of economic thought. The central idea of the essay - and hub of the Malthusian theory - was a simple one. If the natural increase in population occurs the food supply becomes insufficient, and the size of the population is checked by 'misery' - that is the poorest sections of the community suffer disease and famine. Malthus recognises two other possible checks to population expansion: first 'vice' - that is, homosexuality, prostitution, and abortion (all totally unacceptable to Malthus); and second 'moral restraint' - the voluntary limitation of the product of children by the postponement of marriage" (PMM). "For today's readers, living in a post-Malthus era, the world's population problems are well known and serious, but no longer sensational. It is difficult therefore to appreciate the radical and controversial impact made by the Essay at the time of publication. It challenged the conventional notion that population growth is an unmixed blessing. It discussed prostitution, contraception, and other sexual matters. And it gave vivid descriptions of the horrendous consequences of overpopulation and of the brutal means by which populations are checked" (ODNB). Despite its unpopularity with liberal critics, Malthus's principle of population became accepted as a central tenet of classical political economy and Charles Darwin acknowledged Malthus's influence in the development of his theory of natural selection. Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. Second edition, "with considerable additions from the author's own manuscript and an original memoir". Richard Cobden's copy, with engraved bookplate to the front pastedown for "Dunford Library" (Cobden's home) incorporating the initials "R. C.". Octavo. Contemporary half diced plum roan over marbled boards, the spine ruled in gilt and with titles in gilt. pp. liv, [2], 446. A very good copy, the binding firm albeit with a little cracking to the front hinge, heavy rubbing to the boards, rubbing to the joints and spine ends, and wear to the corners. The contents with some light spotting to the preliminary pages and a minor crease to the bottom corner of a handful of pages are otherwise in very good order throughout. The second, expanded edition of this key work of economic theory by Thomas Malthus, originally published as a rebuttal to David Ricardo's 'On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation' in 1820. This subsequent edition was substantially revised by Malthus himself and published posthumously two years after his death in 1834; it also includes the first appearance of William Otter's notable essay regarding his friend's life, a "Memoir of Robert Malthus". Malthus had set about editing his Principles almost immediately after it appeared in print, incorporating changes both minor and major, particularly with regards to the important chapter on value theory (building on the work of Adam Smith). (Hollander, 'The Economics of Thomas Robert Malthus', p. 4). An interesting association copy, coming from the library of the contemporary radical politician, campaigner for free trade, and co-founder of the Anti-Corn Law League, Richard Cobden (1804-1865). Provenance: From the library of Richard Cobden at his home, Dunford House.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Leather. 8vo. Printed for J. Johnson by T. Bensley, London, UK. 1806. Two Volumes, xvi, 505 pgs; vii, 559 pgs. Third Edition. Bound in gilt ruled fine calf leather with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities (boards are lightly rubbed and worn). Previous owner's bookplate present to the front pastedown. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Third edition, the first to be published in 2 volumes and the first published after the Great Quarto edition of 1803, of one of the most important and influential books in the history of economic thought. The third edition contained numerous revisions, among which was a text entitled, A Reply to the Chief Objections which have been urged against the Essay on the Principle of Population, which was also published separately so that it might be bound with earlier ones. As the world's population continues to grow at a frighteningly rapid rate, Malthus's classic warning against overpopulation gains increasing importance. An Essay on the Principle of Population examines the tendency of human numbers to outstrip their resources, and argues that checks in the form of poverty, disease, and starvation are necessary to keep societies from moving beyond their means of subsistence. Malthus's simple but powerful argument was controversial in his time; today his name has become a byword for active concern about humankind's demographic and ecological prospects. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Plum-coloured publisher's cloth, brown claysized endpapers (rebacked, minor wear to corners, slight bumping to couple corners), still VG- copy, from the libraries of John S. Oliver, 8 Greenhill Park, Edinburgh, member of the Edinburgh Geological Society from 1870-1883, and Elof Axel Carlson (1931-2025), noted geneticist, historian of science, and fierce opponent of eugenics. Seventh edition, of this groundbreaking and very significant work was one of the very few complete Victorian printings of the work, and coincided with intense reform movements in the British E,pire during the 1870's with heightened discussions on poverty, working class living and working conditions, and the emergence of neo-Malthusian birth control advocacy groups. Although Malthus is best known for the 1798 original essay, this first edition was a very short and limited work which served as a response to Godwin, and would be significantly expanded and revised through six editions with additional data points from censuses, and vast changes in world populations through the first three decades of the 19th Century. More importantly this work served as a catalyst for Charles Darwin in his development of the hypothesis on Natural Selection after his reading of Malthus in the last half of 1838, which would eventually underpin his 1859 "On the Origin of Species.".…

"The Principles had only a limited impact at the time. more recently it has received greater recognition, largely as a result of the comments by J. M. Keynes in the 1930s. Keynes argued that Malthus's theory of effective demand provided a scientific explanation of unemployment, and that the hundred-year domination of Ricardo over Malthus had been a disaster for the progress of economics. Keynes believed that if economics had followed Malthus instead of being constrained by Ricardo in an artificial groove, the world would be a much wiser and richer place." (ODNB). Goldsmiths 22767. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Thomas Robert Malthus FRS (13/14 February 1766 - 23 December 1834) was an English cleric, scholar and influential economist in the fields of political economy and demography. In his 1798 book An Essay on the Principle of Population, Malthus observed that an increase in a nation's food production improved the well-being of the populace, but the improvement was temporary because it led to population growth, which in turn restored the original per capita production level. In other words, humans had a propensity to utilize abundance for population growth rather than for maintaining a high standard of living, a view that has become known as the 'Malthusian trap' or the 'Malthusian spectre'.…
