Specific emphasis is given to hardwood timber and understanding its different qualities and grades. It also examines other timber products such as veneer logs, cooperage bolts, pulpwood, feltwood, and also mentions fence posts and fuelwood. The book offers valuable guidance for conducting timber sales and provides a directory of timber buyers in the area. It also delves into the environmental and economic impact of the timber industry and sustainable forestry practices, offering insights for landowners and timber buyers alike. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the aftermath of the disastrous forest fires that ravaged southwestern Maine in 1947, consuming vast tracts of land. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact on the local economy, the affected landowners, and the rehabilitation efforts undertaken to restore the burned-over forests. Drawing on extensive research, including field surveys and interviews with landowners, the book examines the economic losses incurred due to the destruction of timber and the challenges faced by those whose livelihoods depended on forestry. The author explores the complex decision-making process faced by landowners, including their motivations for holding the land and their attitudes towards rehabilitation measures. Furthermore, the book provides insights into the ecological consequences of the fires and the various approaches considered for restoring the affected areas. The author discusses the need for artificial regeneration through planting and the challenges of competing vegetation, presenting a detailed plan for expanding the state's nursery capacity to meet the massive demand for seedlings. The book emphasizes the importance of collaboration and leadership in organizing a comprehensive land rehabilitation program and highlights the potential benefits of such efforts not only for the local economy but also for the long-term sustainability of the region's forests. This insightful analysis contributes significantly to our understanding of the complexities involved in post-fire recovery and offers valuable lessons for future forest management practices. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the ownership of small private forest lands in New England. The author analyzes data from a survey of 23 towns to understand the motivations and characteristics of these landowners. The findings challenge the assumption that forest ownership is primarily driven by financial interests. Instead, many owners value their land for recreational purposes, the satisfaction of ownership, or the preservation of ancestral heritage. The book highlights the need to expand forestry services and education beyond traditional timber production to address the diverse interests of these landowners. It underscores the opportunity to promote sustainable forestry practices that align with the non-timber values that many owners prioritize. This book contributes to a deeper understanding of forest ownership dynamics and offers valuable insights for policymakers, forest managers, and anyone interested in the stewardship of New England's forests. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
