Añadir al carritoMagazine. Condición: Near Fine. 72pp. Quarto [26.5cm]; saddle-stapled in color printed wraps. Black and white newsprint inside. Illustrated with photographs and artwork. [Misprinted inside on the copyright page [p3] as "Vol. 35 No. 2, Litha - Summer 2015," but this is indeed the Mabon, Fall/Autumn, Sept-Oct 2015 issue.] Just a b…it of shelf- and edge-wear. "No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth!" - Earth First! Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group, and the monkey wrench is their ever-present emblem and tool. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice" (Dave Foreman, 1980s). The late-1980s and early-1990s were a tumultuous time for Earth First! Law enforcement cracked down on its members, and various internal issues and factions began to form within the group. Earth First! embraced non-hierarchical structures and organic methods of organization and growth, while continuing to focus on direct action in defense of wilderness as its primary focus. Through the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's, the journal continued to be published in various forms under the direction of a diverse and rotating collective of voices from within the broad Earth First! movement. Regular print publication of the Earth First! Journal under this title seems to have ceased sometime in the early 2020s, though the movement still survives and maintains a presence online and on social media. The front cover of this issue features an image from the Finnish Hyokyaalto Eco Action Group's occupation of Finland's Hanhikivi Cape nuclear power plant and the rear cover shows a Finnish coastal forest that was clear cut by the same nuclear project. The accompanying story "Hyokyaalto Eco Action Group Defends Finland's Coastal Forests From Nuclear Expansion" by Rabbit is printed on pages 19-23 of this issue. Front inner cover shows a striking image captioned "July 30, 2015, thirteen climbers hang from the St. Johns Bridge in Portland, Oregon, to block Shell Oil's icebreaker from heading to the Arctic." The accompanying story "Fighting the Leviathan: Activists in the Northwest Put Their Bodies Between Chell and the Arctic" by Sasha is printed on pages 4-9 of this issue.

Añadir al carritoFull title - AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF DOMESTIC ECONOMY: COMPRISING SUBJECTS CONNECTED WITH THE INTERESTS OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL; SUCH AS THE CONSTRUCTION OF DOMESTIC EDIFICES; FURNITURE; CARRIAGES, AND INSTRUMENTS OF DOMESTIC USE. ALSO, ANIMAL AND VEGETABLE SUBSTANCES USED AS FOOD, AND THE METHODS OF PRESERVING AND PREPARING THEM BY COO…KING; RECEIPTS, ETC MATERIALS EMPLOYED IN DRESS AND THE TOILET; BUSINESS OF THE LAUNDRY; PRESERVATION OF HEALTH; DOMESTIC MEDICINES, &C., &C. BY T. WEBSTER AND MRS. PARKES. EDITED BY D.M. REESE, A.M., M.D. ILLUSTRATED WITH NEARLY ONE THOUSAND ENGRAVINGS. Collates as [front pastedown], [title/copyright leaf], ix-xxiv, [25], 26-1238, [rear flyleaf], [rear free endpaper], [rear pastedown]. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15cm. Original leather spine chipped and worn with surface losses; inelegant but effective (probably early 20th century) repair of black cloth boards and strips of off-white cloth glued down lengthwise along both front and rear joints overlapping boards and spine and obscuring large portion of spine's black title label and its gilt lettering; boards well rubbed with worn corners. All edges marbled but with fading and spots of surface abrasion. Strips of off-white cloth glued lengthwise along both hinges; a few stress points to text block but otherwise binding is firm. First leaf present is title/copyright so missing a ffep and perhaps a flyleaf or two; Roman pagination immediately jumps to pages ix-x for "Preface by the American Editor" but with no interlaying stubs indicative of missing leaves (for pages iii-viii); Preface on pages xi-xiv; Contents on pages xv-xxiv. Innumerable late 19th and early 20th century newspaper clippings as well as several handwritten notes sometimes laid-in but mostly tipped-in (the latter often affixed at margins but a few adhered over text) causing some associated toning to leaves - the most interesting items being: {#1} handwritten recipe for corn beer on small paper slip tipped-in at page 600; {#2} short sheet tipped-in at page 797 with handwritten recipes for Tomato Catsup on recto and Tomato Pickles on verso; {#3 and #4} tipped-in between pages 912-913 are two undated but circa 1870s imprints of "Charles Winkley, Printer, Jackson, Miss." being a toned blank contract for "right to make and use Maxwell's Patent . . . and J.W. Davenport's Balm Preserving Process" plus four page brochure "U.S. Patent. Directions for Preserving Fruits, Vegetables, and Meats" by J.W. Davenport, M.D. Varied foxing throughout. Pencil notes found on pages 1225 and throughout Index (pages 1227-1238) plus faded antiquarian ink writing at top margin of page 1229; possibly some handwritten notes on text pages but none readily apparent upon a quick perusal. AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF DOMESTIC ECONOMY was first published in London in 1844 with subsequent British editions in 1847, 1852, and 1861; evidently the book was more popular in the United States as American editions were issued in 1845, 1847, 1848, 1849, and this 1855. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 4 pounds (1.81 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
