Eric William Ravilious (1903-1942) was a British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver. This book is part of the publisher's 'Ariel Books on the Arts' series. It deals exclusively with his work as a wood engraver, and contains a comprehensive assembly of his engravings. The notes on the career and work of the artist are by Robert Harling, who knew Ravilious and had commissioned his work. The book is bound in the original light grey cloth covered boards with dark grey titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition and the contents are tight and clean with light foxing to the endpapers and the half-title page. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some light soiling and the spine is browned with wear down the edges. The spine ends and top corners are bumped. There are tears of about 1/4" on the spine corners and bottom front edge with smaller tears on the bottom front and top rear corners.
