This research work proves that the people of South Kanara showed keen interest in craft production, apart from agricultural production. Many craft production centres had emerged in the region during the period of study. Trade was another important occupation. Aspects such as fluctuations in trade due to emergence of political and social changes, contribution of traders to the society, items of trade, relationship between agricultural production and trade, and impact of European traders on the regional economy are delineated.
