Condición: Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 388; 380 pages; Clean and secure in original green cloth bindings with borders stamped in blind and gilt lettering at spines, minor wear at spine ends. Richard Lalor Sheil (1791 â" 1851), Irish politician, writer and orator, was born at Drumdowney, Slieverue, County Kilkenny, Ireland. He was admitted a student of Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the Irish bar in 1814. His play of Adelaide, or the Emigrants, was performed at the Crow Street Theatre, Dublin in 1814 and in 1816 performed at Covent Garden. His next play The Apostate was produced at Covent Garden in 1817, firmly establishing his reputation as a dramatist. In 1822 he began to contribute to the New Monthly Magazine a series of papers entitled Sketches of the Irish Bar. These essays are gathered and presented here in two volumes edited by R. Shelton Mackenzie. From a contemporary review: "We cordially recommend these sketches as interesting in matter and brilliant in composition. Their literary merit is very great. The sketches of the Irish Bar paint the characters of the leading persons in Irish politics with graphic fidelity. The revelations of the Jesuits are remarkable." [Atheneum].

The author examines Norbury's rise from humble beginnings to his appointment as Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, highlighting his role in suppressing Irish uprisings during a period of political turmoil. The book explores the complex interplay between Norbury's legal decisions, his personal motivations, and the broader historical context of 18th-century Ireland.
