Ukrainian Christmas, in Spanish. The whole Ukrainian winter feast cycle in full colour: from the Advent fast and the saints' days that open the season (St. Catherine's, St. Andrew's, St. Barbara's, St. Nicholas Day) through Christmas Eve, Christmas, the masked revelry of Malanka, St. Basil's Day and Yordan, the Baptism of Christ - every feast given with both of its dates, new calendar and old. It explains the didukh, the hay beneath the tablecloth, the kutia, the vertep puppet nativity theatre, the eight-pointed Star of Bethlehem carried by the carollers, and the divination games of St. Andrew's Eve, following regional practice from Galicia and Bukovina to the Hutsul Carpathians. Twenty-five legends of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, told in Ukrainian, retold from the folk collections of Dmytro Yavornytsky and illustrated with twenty-five full-page plates.Below the rapids of the Dnipro, on the island of Khortytsia, runaway serfs and steppe fighters built a fortress of sharpened logs and swore an oath: whoever comes here is free, and no man among us is left behind. Out of that oath came the Zaporozhian Sich. This Ukrainian-language collection carries its legends: the founding of the Sich and the death of Baida-Vyshnevetsky; how a man was tested before the brotherhood would take him; the sea raids in the chaiky; Otaman Ivan Sirko; the reply of the Zaporozhians to the Sultan; the kharakternyky, sorcerer-warriors no bullet would touch; Cossack Mamai; the destruction of the Sich; the blind kobzars who carried the memory; and the Cossack who sat down to argue with Fate.A historical introduction explains where the Cossacks came from and what the Sich actually was. A glossary of twenty-nine Cossack terms opens the vocabulary of the tales, and the book closes on the lines of Taras Shevchenko. For Ukrainian readers at home and abroad, for heritage-language and Slavic library collections, and a gift for the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks and Pokrova (1 October).Dvadtsyat p'yat kozatskikh legend, perekazanikh iz zapisiv Dmitra YAvornitskogo, z ilyustratsieyu na tsilu storinku do kozhnoi.Nizhche dniprovikh porogiv, na KHortitsi, vtikachi vid panshchini ta stepovi voini postavili fortetsyu z gostrikh kolod i dali odne odnomu slovo khto priyshov syudi - vilniy, i svoikh ne lishayut.
