The exterior leather is quite scuffed and worn, particularly on the edges and corners. The spine area has a clear reinforcement library tape attached and the spine underneath shows the labels are missing as well as several large pieces. The internal binding has both hinges at boards reinforced with old library tape. There is also a complete break at page 3 to where the only thing holding the front board and previous pages on is the clear tape on the exterior. All of the remaining pages after three are well secured. The book appears complete and the book appears handwriting free, no library markings etc. Pages are toned throughout the several areas showing various degrees of foxing. Second Impression. 136pp. Plus Publishers adverts dated 1894 (30pp) plus a whole page advert listing books by Jules Verne.`Bound in the Publisher's bevelled green cloth with gilt titles to the upper cover and spine which is faded and a little rubbed. The contents are very clean save for the lightest of foxing to the preliminaries. The sixteen coloured plates are quite splendid with one loose and unbound.The end-papers are spotted and darkened and the name of a previous owner is in ink to the head of the front free end-paper. Overall a very good copy for its age.

A reply to Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1791) by the great Scottish jurist, Whig politician and historian. Three editions were speedily sold, and the publisher liberally gave Mackintosh 'several times' the sum of ?30, originally stipulated. Burke had been answered with much power by Thomas Paine. Mackintosh's reply, however, taking a less radical ground, and showing much literary and philosophical culture, was the most effective defense of the position of the Whig sympathizers with the revolution.
