The exterior leather is quite scuffed and worn, particularly on the edges and corners. The spine area has a clear reinforcement library tape attached and the spine underneath sh…ows the labels are missing as well as several large pieces. The internal binding has both hinges at boards reinforced with old library tape. There is also a complete break at page 3 to where the only thing holding the front board and previous pages on is the clear tape on the exterior. All of the remaining pages after three are well secured. The book appears complete and the book appears handwriting free, no library markings etc. Pages are toned throughout the several areas showing various degrees of foxing. A reply to Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1791) by the great Scottish jurist, Whig politician and historian. Three editions were speedily sold, and the publisher liberally gave Mackintosh 'several times' the sum of ?30, originally stipulated. Burke had been answered with much power by Thomas Paine. Mackintosh's reply, however, taking a less radical ground, and showing much literary and philosophical culture, was the most effective defense of the position of the Whig sympathizers with the revolution.
