The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. There is some light rubbing and one small tear to the cloth on the top spine end of the book cover. There is a repaired tear to the spine of the book cloth as well. The text pages are mostly clean and bright, but do have some beginning toning to the edges and the endpapers. The tissue guards on some of the illustrated plates are missing. "The Donnelley company aimed to produce books and periodicals with impressive modern design and mass printed commercial and reference materials. Lakeside Press produced Encyclopædia Britannica, Time Magazine, Life Magazine, promotional literature for the Model T Ford, catalogs for Sears Roebuck, among others. The Press produced high quality collectible editions for the Chicago Caxton Club and the Limited Editions Club. Donnelly was the official printer for the 1933-1934 World's Fair, "A Century of Progress," which took place on the Lake Michigan lakefront just to the east of the plant. The company designed and printed official tickets, postcards, posters, brochures, and magazines which displayed the company's distinctive modernist design. " (from Wikipedia).

    Hardcover. First Edition thus. The tenth Lakeside Classic title issued during the Christmas season of 1912. This book contains narratives from visitors to Chicago as early as 1834 when it was a village. 174 pages and illustrated with a frontispiece. Front cover features gilt borders and the Lakeside Press logo, spine features gilt lettering as well as the top edge. A very clean copy with some rubbing to both boards. A very good plus copy in bright green cloth over boards and very bright gilt lettering.

Marbled endpapers, decorative gilt turn-ins. Top edge gilt. Wear and chipping to spine, front joint worn. Complete with six illustrated plates. (National Union Catalog Pre-1956 Imprints 42994) From the library of Frank A. Vanderlip, with his bookplate affixed to front pastedown. Inscription reads: "For my friend F.A. Vanderlip, from Charles G. Dawes / Jany 20th, 1906." Richard J. Oglesby (1824-1899) fought in both the Mexican War and Civil War, rising to the rank of major general. In 1864, Oglesby was encouraged to run for governor of Illinois by his longtime friend Abraham Lincoln. The following year, Governor Oglesby was present at the Petersen House when Lincoln died on April 15, 1865. Oglesby served three nonconsecutive terms as governor, and he also served one term as a U.S. Senator. The town of Oglesby, Illinois is named in his honor. The preface of this book was written by the future Vice President of the United States, Charles G. Dawes. Impromptu Speech of Governor Richard Oglesby by Judge Marcus Kavanagh, published by the Lakeside Press in 1905. Inscribed by Charles G. Dawes to Frank A. Vanderlip, president of National City Bank, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and architect of (ilustrador). Signed.
