In 1808 at the age of 13, Charles Tyng began service aboard the brig Cordelia as a 'ship's boy.' By his fourth voyage, Tyng had become a mate, and captain of his own ship by his early twenties. Tyng made and lost fortunes in tea, sugar, and cotton while voyaging across the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Caribbean, with visits to Cuba, China, Europe, Indonesia, etc. He recounts his associations with Lord Byron, King Kamehameha of Hawaii, the British princess (later queen) Victoria, and others. From the Dust Jacket: "From mermaids to mutinies, shipwrecks to cholera, the life of Charles Tyng was a nonstop voyage of adventure. His quarter century under sail took him around the world half a dozen times. Fortunately, he proved to be as natural a storyteller as he was a sailor." . First Printing of the First Edition. Añadir al carritoFull Calf. Condición: Very Good. First Trade Edition. Bound in full red calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. 12mo. 18 by 12.5 cm. xxx, [2], 236 pp. 130 Brock illustrations. The Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding is fairly plain, with gilt ruled borders on the boards, but ornate gilt decoration in the spine compartments between the raised bands. All edges gilt. Endpapers unusual, we think -- not a marbled paper, more like a country kitchen wallpaper. The leather is healthy, in the sense it is supple and bright generally, but there is rubbing along the joints and spine extremities, some minor gilt loss, and corners have ever so slightly show wear. Border of FEP has band of heavy browning which tracks perfectly the turn-ins opposite. Trivial soiling of leaves; overall, the book does read as a clean, and tight, copy. Charles E. Brock (ilustrador).…
