With a black and white frontispiece by Christina Duffy and Anne Trembley. A better than very goof copy, the binding square and firm with some bumping to the spine tips and a tiny tear to the lower front spine joint, and a small mark to the upper board. The topstain is darkened towards the fore-edge. The contents, with a bookplate to the front free endpaper and eight tiny spots to the fore-edge of the closed text block, are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Inscribed by the author in black ink on the title page "For Jared! - / Hoping you like dark beer! / Cheers, / Tim Powers". The recipient is an editor and publisher of genre fiction. Issued in an edition of 825 clothbound copies, from which this example is numbered 765, and signed by Tim Powers, the author of the introduction K. W. Jeter, and the author of the afterword James P. Blaylock in black ink on the colophon. The author's first major novel and third overall publication, originally published in 1979 by Del Rey / Ballantine Books in New York and nominated for the 1980 Locus Award for 'Best Fantasy Novel'. Complete with the very lightly rubbed dustwrapper which remains without fading, loss or tears. Housed in the fine, structurally sound slipcase that has some light marks to the sides. Issued in a deluxe limited edition of just 50 copies, from which this example is numbered 48 and signed by the illustrator Grant Griffin and the author of the introduction Tim Powers in black ink on the tissue-guarded colophon. A facsimile of Fritz Leiber's signature is printed in black. Volume three of 'The Chronicles of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser', the multi-award winning author Fritz Leiber's classic sword and sorcery fantasy series about the adventures of two unlikely heroes and friends, the gargantuan barbarian Fafhrd and the diminutive thief Gray Mouser. The series is made up of novellas and vignettes that were first published in magazines (most frequently in 'Fantastic' magazine) before being collected into the 'Swords' series in book form. Leiber is considered a master of the sword and sorcery genre and popularized the term himself in 1961.
