Jahrhunderts einen Großteil Asiens eroberten, fielen sie 1241 in Europa ein. Sie schlugen ein polnisches und ein ungarisches Aufgebot und besetzen einen Großteil Ungarns. Doch obwohl die Zeitgenossen davon ausgingen, dass ganz Europa erobert werden würde, zogen sich die Mongolen im Frühjahr 1242 plötzlich zurück. Dieser überraschende Rückzug stellt bis heute die Historiker vor eine Herausforderung.Gängige Erklärungsansätze vermuten politische, logistische oder militärische Erwägungen hinter der Entscheidung, sich aus Europa zurückzuziehen. Neue Erkenntnisse der historischen Umweltforschung hingegen erlauben einen Erklärungsansatz, der Umwelteinflüsse miteinbezieht. Der Ansatz basiert auf der Rekonstruktion von Wetterdaten aus den 1240er Jahren.
