His best work is in the presentation of modern Jewish history, in which he is singularly exact and conscientious, and to which he gives an exhaustive literature of sources; here he exhibits not only a fine discernment of what is historically important, but a spirit of fairness which is the more creditable because he wrote in the midst of the struggle for Reform.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. Volume 2 only. (2), 338 pages. 24 x 18 cm. Martin Philippson was born June 27, 1846, at Magdeburg; eldest son of Ludwig Philippson. In 1862 he went with his parents to Bonn, and studied history at the universities there and at Berlin from 1863 to 1866, devoting himself espec…ially to work under Sybel and Ranke. He taught at the Jewish normal school of Berlin 1868-70, and then served in the Franco-Prussian war as a volunteer. In 1871 he established himself as a lecturer at the University of Bonn, and was appointed assistant professor in 1875. He was later chosen as full professor by various faculties, but the Emperor William I. was unwilling to see a Jew in the chair of modern history at the university, and refused to sanction the appointment. Philippson thereupon accepted the position of professor at the University of Brussels in the fall of 1878. As dean of this university he came into conflict with the anti-German and radical-socialistic party among the students, resigning his office in consequence in 1891. Since that time he has lived at Berlin, devoting a large part of his time to the promotion of the interests of German Judaism. He is executive chairman of the Deutsch-Israelitische Gemeindebund, as well as of the Verein zur Förderung der Wissenschaft des Judenthums, which was founded largely through his efforts in 1902, and of the Verband der Deutschen Juden. He held the office of vice-chairman of the board of trustees of the Lehranstalt für die Wissenschaft des Judenthums until 1904. Graetz was born to a butcher family in Xions (now Ksiaz Wielkopolski), Grand Duchy of Posen, in Prussia (now in Poland), he attended Breslau University, but since Jews at that time were barred from receiving Ph.D.s there, he obtained his doctorate from the University of Jena. After 1845 he was principal of the Jewish Orthodox school of the Breslau community, and later taught history at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland). His magnum opus History of the Jews was quickly translated into other languages and ignited worldwide interest in Jewish history. As his fame grew so did the embarrassment at Breslau University, and so in 1869 it bestowed on him an honorary doctorate.The Spaniards also wanted to make amends for having expelled 200,000 Spanish Jews a few centuries earlier and for burning of Jews alive ("auto da fe") in public squares in Spain and in her colonies, in the centuries following the expulsion, and so in 1888 they bestowed on Graetz an Honorary Membership in the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences.

The institute published some eighty titles from 1855 to 1873 in the fields of Jewish history, theology, literature and apologetics, including seven volumes of The History of the Jews by Heinrich Graetz. The yearbook published mostly short, general contributions, designed to provide a representative overview of the scholarly exploration of particular subjects, including contemporary views Yearbook II includes the contributions "Eliah of Pesaro" and a "Family Megillah" by J. M. Jost, , an autobiography of Menasse Ben Israel by M. Kayserling, a contribution on Baruch Spinoza by Ludwig Philippson, and contributions on the history if Jewish doctors in Italy, in particular the sixteenth century, edited by Livius Fürst. Contains a folding plate showing ancient, Paleo-Hebrew scripts at rear. Text in German, Gothic script. Binding with some wear along edges, light scuffing and light chipping, with front joint slightly more affected and some cracking an chipping at tail of spine. Light foxing at first and last few pages, else sporadic. Block somewhat age-toned.
