Including 122 flatweaves from five different continents, this exhibition focuses on the kilim, a type of Oriental flatweave rug. Early in the 1900s, they were used mostly as drapes and covers, and they often adorned the walls of mensÆ smoking rooms and studies. These rugs went out of fashion, however, until they became popular again in the late 1980s because of their inclusion in certain decorator magazines. Today, kilims as art can be subdivided into naturalistic, constructivistic, or abstract forms. This book depicts each of these rugs in large, color illustrations, and it also includes descriptions of the symbols, patterns, and techniques used in each rug as well as commentaries on their functions in the societies from which they originated. , English/ Swedish, Year1992, Illust. Publisher's blue cloth, pictorial dustjacket. New. Stockholm, J. P. Willborg, 2002. 4to. 29,5 x 24 cms. 404 pp. Richly illustrated in colour throughout. With an introduction about weaving techniques and four sections covering Nomads, the Feridan area, Chahar Mahal province, and carpet types (zighlar, khersak, gilim). (Publisher:) "Chahar Mahal va Bakhtiari provides an in-depth study of the traditional weavings of the Bakhtiari nomads and the settled peoples of the Chahar Mahal and Feridan regions in western Iran, both as sophisticated works of art and symbols of a disappearing, pre-industrial way of life. The captivating beauty of these weavings is the work of highly skilled dyers and weavers, who used the fine local wool and dyes to create characteristic warm, glowing colours transformed into a wealth of imaginative traditional designs. Based on extensive field studies, comparative research, as well as technical and design analysis, the author presents rugs and carpets from some eighty villages. The book includes many wonderful and previously unpublished pieces, such as the oldest known Bakhtiari and a number of the so-called Great Khan carpets. Other weavings that were essential to the nomadic lifestyle include saddle and storage bags, tent bands, bedding and even a cow cover for very special animals. Each village is individually discussed and there are chapters on weaving types and techniques, plus a full structural analysis. With over 500 colour and b/w illustrations and 2 maps. This book is published to coincide with 'The Colours and People of Bakhtiari', a major exhibition of the best old weavings from the Bakhtiari province, on view at Jakobsgatan 10, Gallerian, Stockholm, from 11 October to 13 November 2002".
