Conceived as series, these documentary photographs juxtapose the miscellany of the com…mercial architecture of Toronto's Yonge Street with the uniform elegance of rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis in Paris; an aging zinc foundry in Montreal with a venerable independent garage in Toronto; the functional Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto with the tiny, lushly decorated Théâtre du Tambour Royal in Paris. Shifting from the industrial to the moumental to the domestic, MacCallum's roving eye lands upon the gritty morphology of the coal-fired Lakeview Generating Station, the restoration of Walter Alward's great limestone monument at Vimy Ridge, and the classical Greek spirit expressed in the front porches of ordinary Toronto houses dating from the early decades of the 20th century. The result is an engrossing collection of photographs that reveal a disarming beauty in sites that both embody and encompass a rich history of industry, commerce, and human habitation.

"'The House That Jack Built', published in 1981 in an exhibition catalogue . ; republished in 1982 as a separate slim book; and finally exhibited in 1992 as a suite of pho…tographs, presents another Jack and another rhyme. Photographs telling the story of Jack and 'the maiden, all forlorn, that milked the cow with the crumpled horn' are projected onto screens and windows in the studio model ('The Third Room', [a perfect small model of Massey's own studio where at that time he had been living and working for seven years] .), the 'house' in which this Jack then lived. All of these works reference childhood, a private world of senses and memories, early unvoiced (possibly not understood) inklings and perceptions. In the way that fairytales and nursery rhymes refigure information for and from an adult consciousness, these works give a set of rules or circumstances as grand metaphor from Massey's interior life.".
