Geburtstag (2008) vorlegen. Sein Gesundheitszustand, vor allem seine nachlassende Sehkraft, ließ dieses Vorhaben nicht mehr zu. Über viele Jahrzehnte hatte er handschriftliche Aufzeichnungen, Briefe, Glückwünsche, Aktenvermerke und auch Tagebuchnotizen verfasst und gesammelt. Aus diesem Fundus erstellte er seit den frühen 90er Jahren Hunderte von Skripten auf Tausenden von Schreibmaschinenseiten zu Einzelfragen oder bestimmten Themenkomplexen, zum Teil in mehreren Fassungen, die zur Textbasis seiner geplanten Autobiografie werden sollten. Aufbewahrt und sachlich geordnet in Dutzenden von Karteikästen entstand daraus ein Privatarchiv, das er im Frühjahr 2009 dem Verfasser für eineinhalb Jahre leihweise zur Verfügung stellte. Diese Aufzeichnungen bilden die Grundlage der Arbeit über den wichtigsten und bekanntesten Blockparteichef in der DDR, der einer der Stellvertreter von Walter Ulbricht, Willi Stoh, Erich Honecker und Egon Krenz im Staatsrat und zeitweise Volkskammerpräsident war.
