oblong 8vo. quarter cloth and paper, following the pattern used on Prudence's anthology. (108) pages. Poems for Prudence & Rosalind, compiled and embellished by Douglas Percy Bliss. Limited to 500 copies. A fine copy. Published jointly with Liss Llewellyn. "The poems are meant to be read aloud, which we really hope you will do to get the best from them." -colophon the text was set in 12pt Garamond by Harry McIntosh at Speedspools and printed letterpress by Simon Lawrence at the Fleece Press; the facsimile pages were printed in Sheffield by Northend Creative Print Solutions. The binding was done at the Fine Book Bindery. From the artist's website: "Douglas Percy Bliss served in both World War One and World War Two; in the latter he put his artistic training to use by working in camouflage and deception, and in his spare time made two collections of favourite poems for his daughters, Prudence and Rosalind. In total there were 66 poems, almost all of them illustrated by a carefully made coloured drawing, and the little girls treasured these gifts. Both are fully published here in facsimile form (much the same sort of feel as Mr Kilburns Calicos) with a letterpress introductory section printed at the Fleece Press and several tipped-in illustrations. hown at lower left is the illustration for The Elfin People Fill the Tubes, a fairy poem by Winifred Mary Letts, one almost unknown even to her descendants. It was printed in Punch in 1920, and then disappeared from public familiarity, though Douglas or Phyllis remembered it, and Douglas illustration captures some fairy magic. The poem begins I know a solemn secret to keep between ourselves, I heard it from a sparrow, who heard it from the elves: like the rest of the poems, these are meant for reading aloud, to children or even just to ourselves. " quarter cloth and paper, following the pattern used on Prudence's anthology. Fleece Press (ilustrador). …

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. 8vo., xii, 413 pages, partly uncut, some light browning to extreme outer margins unaffecting the text in anyway, top edges blocked in gilt, fine gilt ornate decoration to inner gilt dentelles. bound in fine quality blue morocco, matching gilt ruled outer borders with fine matching gilt ornate decoration to both front and rear covers, gilt decorated spine in compartments with raised bands, with a floral design within each compartment, together with gilt title. A VG+ tightly bound copy in a most handsome binding. One of 2,000 copies printed in 'Florence' type on fine antique laid paper. Founded in 1908 by the London publishers Chatto & Windus and operated by Philip Lee Warner, the Florence Press had as its expressed intention the production of "beautiful books in the choicest types," but in somewhat larger and less costly editions than Kelmscott and the other more celebrated English fine presses. Florence books are readily distinguishable by their special type, designed by Herbert P. Horne after 15th century Italian faces that are elegant, simple, and easily readable. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 1822) was an English writer who is considered one of the major English Romantic poets. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views, Shelley did not achieve fame during his lifetime, but recognition of his achievements in poetry grew steadily following his death, and he became an important influence on subsequent generations of poets, including Robert Browning, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Thomas Hardy, and W. B. Yeats. American literary critic Harold Bloom describes him as "a superb craftsman, a lyric poet without rival, and surely one of the most advanced sceptical intellects ever to write a poem.".…

Añadir al carrito1p., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Letterhead illustrated in old-fashioned style, with a bare-chested woman clutching a pen, floating at the head of a twirl of loose papers and fabrics. The circular, which encloses a prospectus, draws the recipient's notice to the nature of the two courses offered within it. It concludes: 'The clever student will find that the lessons cost him nothing - in fact that they pay him, over and over again, before the Advanced Course is completed - for the Art Editors who have helped to organize these Courses are naturally interested in my students' drawings, and they buy a large number each week. | I teach every student - and submit his drawings for sale - personally. Owing to the great demand for these Courses, I can only accept a few more pupils now; you should, therefore, let me know at once if you wish me to help you.' Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Sehr gut. "Cleanly printed from first to last" as Cobden-Sanderson remarked on 'Shelley'. A very good copy of 200 printed on paper from a total edition of 212 copies (12 on vellum). Description: Original full limp vellum with title in gilt on spine. Octavo: 24 × 17 cm; pp. 181. Printed in black and red on Doves handmade paper, top edge cut, fore and lower edges trimmed. Inner pastedown stamped 'The Doves Bindery'. Ref.: Cobden-Sanderson 1922, 142; Tidcombe DP35 Condition: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing. Pages tightly bound throughout, pages 102-103 and 106-[107] show some yellow discolourations (verso of gathering g1, obviously an incident during printing), edges slightly spotted. But otherwise, a very good, clean copy. Notes: The 'Shelley' print was a tough nut to crack. By May 1914, when Shelley was printed, Cobden-Sanderson had recovered from his long illness, but he had become over-sensitive about the quality of the presswork.
