Dedicated to T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts bookbinding movement, the work examines the development of gold-tooled bindings from their technical foundations to their highest artistic achievements, combining historical narrative with close analysis of surviving examples. Horne begins with the craft of binding itself, discussing materials, tools, techniques, sewing structures, covering, decoration, and the evolution of the binder's art, before tracing the emergence of fine gold tooling in Italy and its subsequent refinement in France and England.
