Wrapper covers are darkened and chipped at the edges, text pages are uniformly toned, two or three autograph names in page margins, good or better overall. Scarce Philadelphia directory of residents, with much additional information and illustrated advertisements. The directory proper denotes African-American residents with a preceding cross symbol, including Richard Allen (1760-1831), a Methodist minister and abolitionist who inspired Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King; and James Forten (1766-1842), a sailmaker and businessman who employed both Black and white workers, and was one of the wealthiest Philadelphians of his day.
