Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating history of papyrology, tracing the journey of rediscovering ancient texts and the evolution of this specialized field. Beginning with early, often haphazard attempts to recover classical manuscripts, the narrative highlights pivotal moments such as… the efforts at the Library of Alexandria and the resurgence of interest during the Renaissance. The author meticulously examines the challenges and triumphs encountered in deciphering and reconstructing these fragile documents, particularly focusing on the Herculaneum papyri, a collection of carbonized scrolls unearthed from the ruins of a villa buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Initial excitement surrounding the discovery gave way to disappointment as the texts proved to be primarily philosophical works of Epicureanism, a school of thought that held little appeal for 18th-century scholars. Despite this setback, the quest to uncover lost works of antiquity persisted, leading to remarkable finds in Egypt during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through a detailed exploration of key discoveries, scholarly contributions, and advancements in papyrological techniques, this book sheds light on the intricate process of bringing ancient voices back to life. Ultimately, it underscores the enduring value of papyrology in enriching our understanding of classical literature, history, and the everyday lives of people in the Graeco-Roman world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Añadir al carritosmall 4to. cloth, paper cover and spine labels, slipcase. 671, (3) pages. First edition. Fine in fine slipcase. This catalogue provides a descriptive bibliography of books in the Ahmanson-Murphy Aldine collection at the University of California, Los Angeles, together with abbreviated notices of works not at UCLA. Handsomely prod…uced, slipcased, and carefully annotated, this volume should become a major resource for Aldine studies and the history of the book. The Aldine Press revolutionized the production, accessibility, and use of the book. Founded by Aldus Manutius (c. 1452-1515), the press introduced a number of innovations that helped shape the development of the modern book, including italic type and the smaller, pocket-sized volume. By putting the Greek and Latin classics in a form that everyone could afford, it revolutionized scholarship: the uniform Aldine texts made comparison and collation universally available, and they were used in schools. Collectors were interested in the Aldine Press from the beginning; Jean Grolier acquired over two hundred of its publications, often having the books elegantly bound and handsomely illuminated. Since that time, the output of the Aldine Press has been sought after by scholars, book collectors, and librarians. Copies of its books are found in libraries all over the world, where they remain a prized possession and the object of much scholarly research. For thirty-two years, Franklin D. Murphy, who came to UCLA as its sixth chancellor, fostered the expansion of the Aldine collection and encouraged its growth. During the greater part of this long period he was joined in these endeavors by the Ahmanson Foundation, whose constant support permitted the collection to increase in both size and significance. Following Dr. Murphy's death, the Ahmanson Foundation continued its generous support for the expansion of the collection and, in addition, by means of a grant late in 1996, enabled the present catalogue to come into existence. The binding cloth used for both the book and the slipcase is a Japanese book cloth (no. 2504) distributed by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. The binding board is 110 point acid-free Eska board from Ecological Fibers, Inc. cloth, paper cover and spine labels, slipcase. Aldine Press (ilustrador).
