Mauric…e Caullery was a French biologist known for his research on parasitic protozoans and marine invertebrates. Caullery taught at the University of Marseille (1900) and the University of Paris (1903) and succeeded Alfred Giard as director of the zoological station at Wimereux (1909). He was particularly interested in how the morphology, reproduction, and ecology of tunicates (related to vertebrates) and annelid worms had a bearing on their evolution. He also described and named the marine worm Siboglinum weberi, which later became the basis for establishing the invertebrate phylum Pogonophora. Herbert Spencer Jennings was an American zoologist, one of the first scientists to study the behavior of individual microorganisms and to experiment with genetic variations in single-celled organisms. Jennings graduated from Harvard University (1896). He wrote his doctoral thesis on the morphogenesis of rotiferans (microscopic aquatic organisms), an area of scientific interest he pursued for the next 10 years. The culmination of his research and his primary contribution to zoology was his Behaviour of the Lower Organisms (1906). In this study of the reactions of individual organisms and individual response to stimuli, Jennings reported new experimental evidence of the similarity of activity and reactivity in all animals, from protozoans to man. From the library Dr. Owen Hannaway. Hannaway was director of the Center for the History and Philosophy of Science at Johns Hopkins University. He authored numerous books and served as an editor of academic magazines in the history of science.
