Although deeply rooted in a system of practices and discourses aimed at continuing the 'mos maiorum', the traditional concept of 'virtus' underwent serious changes in the course of time: it was reconsidered, reassessed, and even replaced with new definitions of moral excellence. The editors of the present volume have sought to gather contributions which shed new light on the ancient representation of moral excellence or discuss relevant aspects of the rich but complex 'Wirkungsgeschichte' of the Roman concept of 'virtus'. Thematically coherent, the book testifies to the rich variety of approaches currently adopted in classical philology, ancient history, Early Christian and Byzantine Studies, and the study of Latin texts from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. The Sermones ad populum are a part of Augustine's work that, especially in its relation to the rest of the Augustinian corpus, deserves more attention. Frequently studied topics are the transmission of the sermons, the bishop's homiletic methodology, his use of Scripture and classical rhetoric, his view on the episcopate, his theology of proclamation and his opinions about the cult of the martyrs. Augustine's sermons also serve as an invaluable source for the study of the North African Church and its liturgical practices at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century. The dating and the chronology of the sermons have likewise been the object of many publications. As a matter of fact, they are still much debated. On May 29-31, 2008, the research units History of Church and Theology and Literary Studies: Latin Literature of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven organized an international conference on Augustine's Sermones ad populum in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the Series Latina of Corpus Christianorum (Brepols Publishers), the Revue benedictine (Maredsous) and the Augustinian Historical Institute (Heverlee). Tandis que le dernier offre une exegese relativement simple de Rom. 7, 15-25, les sermons 151-156 contiennent un commentaire systematique et plutot complexe sur Rom. 7, 5-8, 17, dans lequel l'eveque d'Hippone propose une nouvelle exegese de Rom. 7, 14-25 et 8, 4. L'introduction a l'edition contient a cote d'une discussion detaillee de la datation des sermons 151-156 (ecrite en collaboration avec J. Lossl de Cardiff University) et de la specificite de leur argumentation, une etude approfondie de leur transmission directe et indirecte.
