Ephemeral bits about recently published books laid in. Also noted as Extra Series Nos. 27/28, 29/30, 35/36, 39/40, 41/42, and 43/44. Volume II, Nos. 3/4 was published in October 1842 and contains "The Western Captive - The Times of Tecumseh" by Mrs. Seba Smith. Nos. 5/6, also published in October 1842, is titled "Chemistry and its Application to Agriculture and Physiology" by Lyon Playfair. This particular issue is paginated from 1-16, 33-64, and 17-32, so it is complete but not in order. Nos. 11/12, published in November 1842, features Frederick Bremer's "The Neighbors, A Story of Everyday Life" and is paginated from 1-16, 33-62, 17-32. Nos. 15/16 is incomplete, having only pages 1-32 but stopping mid-sentence. It was published in December 1842, titled "Memoirs of the Queens of France with Notices of the Royal Favorites" by Mrs. Forbes Bush. Nos. 17/18, published January 1843, is a special Christmas-New Year edition with many articles, essays, poems, etc., including "To the Gentle Reader" by the editor (Benjamin); "An Episode in Life" by Sir Edward Lytton Bulwer (as written); "Smuggler's Bride"; "Lady of Ashlynn"; "Myrto and Aldatjee"; and much more as well as lovely engravings of Victoria, Albert, and their children; Napoleon; St. Petersburg; and others throughout the issue. Finally, Nos. 19/20, published in January 1943, contains "The Nautilus - Select Nautical Tales and Sea Sketches" and is complete in 32 pages. Very typical contents for periodicals of the era. Fair. Tight and without extraneous marks, but covers are worn and chipped, and binding is cracking at front hinge, with a tear at head of spine. Pages are foxed but readable, and some page edges are chipped or have corners folded, and a couple have one or two small tears. Ffep through p. 2 detaching at very lower part of binding. Vol. II, Nos. 15-16 is incomplete (stops mid-sentence at bottom of page 32).
