Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Reprint. Minor edge and corner wear; no dj; lightly scuffed and scratched; corners are gently bumped and rubbed; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Red boards with black lettering on the spine. 210 historical and informative pages! "This memoir is of one who lived a noble life and possessed a charming personality. He filled with distinction a part on a wide stage, having known the extremes of adversity and prosperity, and met both with equanimity and serenity. He stood before Presidents and Kings without being confounded or elated, and helped those in need without patronizing them. Gibbon, in his charming memoirs, declares that 'the romance of 'Tom Jones,' that exquisite picture of human manners, will outlive the palace of Escurial and the imperial eagle of the house of Austria.'." --- from Chapter 1 (His Ancestry).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Early. 8vo; x, 431 pages; Decorated blue cloth binding with gold colored title box on spine. Embossed floral pattern in black on front board and spine. Previous owner's inscriptions on front endpapers, otherwise contents clean and secure in original publisher's binding. Some fading to cloth at rear board. Original owner's inscriptin: " Norborne Nelson / from / Miss Hall / Xmas 187-". Second owner's inscription: "Rosewell Randolph Page / from his / God Mother / November 1894" Both names are among the "First Families of Virginia." Earliest recipient likely Captain William Norborne Nelson (1824-1894) of Millwood, Clarke County, Virginia, who served in the 2nd Virginia Infantry. Second recipient Rosewell Randolph Page (1884-1951), also of Millwood, Clarke County, Virginia. The "god mother" who presented the book to Rosewell R. Page is possibly Mary Atkinson Page Nelson (1827-1899), wife of Captain William Norborne Nelson. The interconnections of the Page - Nelson - Randolph families is extensive. An interesting association copy of this classic Dickens work.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'Thomas Nelson Page: A Memoir of a Virginia Gentleman' provides an intimate and comprehensive look at the life of one of the American South's most influential literary and diplomatic figures. Written by his brother, Rosewell Page, this biography traces Thomas Nelson Page's journey from his formative years in Virginia to his distinguished career as an author, lawyer, and United States Ambassador to Italy during the First World War.The memoir captures the essence of Page's literary contributions, which were instrumental in shaping the post-Civil War perception of the South through celebrated works like 'In Ole Virginia'. It explores his deep connection to his heritage and his role as a representative of the 'Virginia gentleman' ideal. Beyond his literary achievements, the narrative details his significant diplomatic service during a global crisis, offering a unique perspective on his character and dedication to public service. This work serves as an essential resource for those interested in Southern literature, early 20th-century American diplomacy, and the social history of Virginia. It preserves the legacy of a man whose life mirrored the complexities and transitions of the American experience at the turn of the century. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
