In V.?s view, love is not a psychic constant but a cultural creation, and any ancient practice of eroticism is propelled not by a supposedly ?universal?…dynamic of love but by the specific codes which governed love?s operations in the ancient world. V. thus brings to love poetry the same techniques of analysis that he has applied to Greek myth. (?) Like myth and truth then, love and literature are not immutable terms, and the study of Latin love poetry entails the study of the cultural system of which it is just one expression. Within this theoretical framework, an author.s poetic ?confession? of love becomes not the personal expression of thranshistorical sentiment but a culturally specific discourse. (?) V. provides a valuable service in attempting to establish the conceptual structures which underpinned the writing of love in first-century B.C. Rome. (?) V. follows the recommendation of Foucault himself in ?Qu?est-ce qu?un auteur?? (?) and challenges the authority of the author. For V. demonstrates that the power of ancient moral discourse constrains both the love-poet and his poetic utterances. Erotic language transcends the individual user?s control. Foucault was not concerned with literary analysis when he constructed a history of sexuality. V., however, is aware of the peculiar, discursive status of literary eroticism. To Foucault?s study of prescriptive texts, V. adds a new dimension - poetics. In ?Roman Erotic elegy? he is deeply concerned with the whole issue of textual interpretation, with the hermeneutics of erotic confession. (?) V. ascribes historicity not only to love, but also to the process of writing and of reading first-person erotic narratives. (?) V. concerns himself fruitfully with the codes that govern the role of elegiac text?s reader and narrator ion the construction of literary meaning. Drawing on the work of Russian formalists, reception theorists, semioticians, narratologists and Marxist literary critics, V. looks beyond the author to historically determined systems of reading and writing as an explanation of the literary work. Firstly, V. provides the reader with a substantial role in the literary process. (?) Secondly (?), V. takes as his starting-point not the life-styles of the elegiac poets but their narrative techniques. (?) Probably V.?s most significant contribution to the study of elegy is his ensuing analysis of the rules which governed first-person narration in antiquity. V.?s detailed exploration of the poetic self, the traditional codes which governed the construction of the authorial Ego, should have a lasting effect on future scholarship in the field.' Hij schrijft (p.10): 'Ondanks mijn hoge leeftijd was het mijn plicht, als voormalig professor en als mens, om te verklaren hoe verbijsterd ik ben over deze onbegrijpelijke verwoesting en om een beeld te schet…sen van wat eens de pracht van Palmyra was, die we vanaf nu alleen nog uit boeken kunnen kennen.' Het is opgedragen aan de zo wreed vermoorde Khaled al-Assaad, archeoloog, directeur van de opgravingen en de restauratie van oudheden in Palmyra tussen 1963 en 2003. In twaalf hoofdstukken geeft Veyne een prachtig beeld van Palmyra, een stad waar men dineerde met de goden, zich kleedde in zijden gewaden en die een sterk 'hybride identiteit' had. 'Nergens zien we een plaats waar een groter aantal invloeden had kunnen samenkomen: het oude Mesopotamië, het antieke Aramese Syrië, Fenicië, een beetje Perzië, iets meer Arabië; en ter bekroning van dat alles de Griekse cultuur en het Romeinse politieke kader' (p.93). Juist op deze verscheidenheid legt Veyne (terecht) sterk de nadruk en dat is in het kader van dit boekje ook goed te begrijpen: 'Palmyra was anders dan elke andere stad van het rijk. Of haar kunst primitivistisch, oriëntaals, hybride of helleniserend is, of haar tempels wel of geen ramen hebben, of haar notabelen Griekse of Arabische kleren dragen, of er Aramees, Arabisch, Grieks of zelfs, bij belangrijke gelegenheden, Latijn werd gesproken ? steeds voel je dat er over Palmyra een wind van vrijheid, van on-conformisme, van 'multiculturalisme' waait' (p.125). Alle facetten van de geschiedenis van Palmyra komen kort aan bod en daarom is het een leuk boekje om je snel te oriënteren in de fascinerende Palmyra-wereld. (.) Veyne eindigt met: 'Nee, het valt niet te betwisten: wie maar één cultuur ? zijn eigen cultuur ? kent en wil kennen, veroordeelt zichzelf ertoe te leven onder een stolp.' Ce dernier se définit par le savoir qu?il apporte sur un passé préhistorique, et les tentatives de rationalisation visent à soumettre ce discours aux contraintes de la chronologie, de la généalogie et de la géographie, propres au récit historique. Le mythe livre des informations, et le problème est de déterminer les modalités de leur réception, de leur vraisemblance. (?) Le livre de Paul Veyne devrait donc contribuer à un renouveau de la réflexion sur la fonction du mythe et son horizon de réception. L?évolution de l?écriture du mythe, de la Théogonie hésiodique aux scholiasts byzantins, en passant par les périégètes, les logographs et les poètes alexandrins, entraîne nécaissairement une série de modifications dans les modalités de cette réception et les comportements intellectuels qu?elle implique.
