Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Good. Folio. 4pp. 20 ½ x 14 ½ inches. Disbound. Toned and foxed. Creased at fold with minor separations. Pages 2-4 misnumbered 6-8. Several separation holes at gutter (not affecting text). Final leaf trimmed a bit close at the lower margin, shaving the first letters of General St. Clair's biography. In goo…d condition. Contains "letters not before published" heated exchanges between Gov. Troup of Georgia and the Federal Government, including the president, John Quincy Adams and the Secretary of War, James Barbour over state rights and the Treaty of Indian Springs. Troup was furious that General Edmund Gaines had published an open letter in local newspapers criticizing the treaty, calling it fraudulent and a land grab. Troup's first cousin, Creek Chief William McIntosh (Scottish father, Creek mother), had signed the treaty, giving over 4 million acres of land to Georgia. The Creek nation and the Federal Government, however, disagreed, saying Chief McIntosh didn't have the authority to give away their land. Troup wanted Gen. Gains to be arrested, tried, punished and put in chains for interfering in state affairs. Chief McIntosh was executed by the Creek and Adams nullified the treaty, signing a new treaty, allowing the Creek to stay on their land. The following year, Gov. Troup mobilized the Georgia Militia, telling President Adams that he was ready to fight the U.S. Army "We will stand by our arms". Adams had no desire to go to war with Georgia and allowed the forcible removal of the Creek Indians by Troup's militia. Also includes a description of several states and places. Rhode Island, Delaware, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Greenwich Village (Massachusetts) and Oregon Territory. This is a very early mention and description of Oregon Territory, which was first named in print just 3 years earlier "Oregon Terr" in 1822 by Henry Tanner in his Map of North America (see Oregon encyclopedia). Greenwich Village, incorporated in 1754, was a village located near Belchertown. In 1938, the land was seized, inhabitants were displaced and the town was razed and flooded to create the Quabbin Reservoir. The description is one of a lush and idyllic village, also mentions the kidnaping of a Mrs. Rownaldson (Mary Rowlandson) and child by the Indians and the killing of her child on mount Eliza. Also contains the criminal code of Massachusetts (crimes against chastity, polygamy, adultery and violating the sepulchers of the dead) , Lafayette's last act in America, biography of General Arthur St. Clair (a friend of George Washington) and lots of advertising. [Oregon Territory - Description] [Creek Indians, Removal - Georgia].

Añadir al carrito8vo. 73, [3] pp. Black embossed cloth, embossed blind-stamped lettering on front cover (minor edgewear, rubbing, slightly shaken), still VG- copy from the library of Edwin Vincent O'Hara (1881-1956), Roman Catholic Priest, educator, social reformer, and author of the Pioneer Catholic History of Oregon., whose manuscript note ind…icates this copy was acquired after he became the bishop of Great Falls, MT in 1923. First edition of this scarce Oregon imprint, and one of the earliest publications issued by the Mount Angel Seminary Press. This work publishes in Latin the orders and decrees describing and outlining the work and efforts of the Catholic missionaries and churches in the Oregon Territory and later state. It includes orders, decrees, and letters concerning missions and churches in Walla Walla, Vancouver Island, Portland, Willamette Valley from and to the Archbishops and Bishops in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and Vancouver Island. Of particular interest, the second Provincial Council was vehemently opposed to Public Schools, and that due to the "swearing, cursing and Profane expressions . . . of public school children" all good Catholics were "enjoined to preserve the little ones from the poisoned atmosphere of these godless institutions." The Third Provincial Council was overseen by Archbishop William Gross who was also responsible for urging the Benedictine Monks to establish the Mount Angel Seminary to train Pacific Northwest priests.

Añadir al carrito8vo. 90, [6] pp. Front printed wrapper still present (minor chipping to fore-edges, minor toning, w/o rear wrap), still G- copy. First edition of this surprisingly scarce history of Western Washington before it became a territory. Included are notes about the dispute between the United States and Great Britain over the territory… held by the Hudson Bay Company, Dr. Tolmie missionary at Fort Nisqually and diary of the first ascent of Mt. Rainier; origins of the Puget Sound Agricultural Co., and finally the arrival of the first Catholic missionaries along the Cowlitz River. Of particular interest is Bagley's description of the Chronological & Historical Ladder of Religion which was a visual teaching tool for local Chinook and Cowlitz tribal members at the Mission.

Añadir al carritoPamphlet, removed, and disbound, 8vo, 6 pp. A few small chips on left margin; normal aging. Ink notation on last page. This petition is an appeal by Americans living in the Oregon territory for protection by the United States Government. The folks in Oregon were feeling neglected and wondered why they were less entitled to prote…ction because they lived west of the Rocky Mountains. They cite the challenges of having to live among large Indian tribes and dealing with a "might foreign power" (Great Britain). They also claim that they moved to Oregon, not just to improve their lot in life, but to extend the "area of freedom" promoted by the United States. The document strongly suggests that previous requests for aid have been ignored. This seems to have particular significance with respect to their relationship with the Indians. According to the petitioners, part of the problem with the Indians, "whose predatory habits and thievish propensities" were becoming a much larger concern, relates to a failure of the United States Government. It seems for some reason, the Indians actually expected to be paid for their lands, and the U.S. had thus far failed to make good. Also, the petitioners ask, since a treaty with Great Britain had been signed, what obstacles could there be to meeting their request. The petitioners are listed with printed signatures, including Peter H. Burrnett, future Governor of Oregon. 30th Congress 1st session Senate Document number 136.
