Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. For the men and women of the skilled trades in the early 20th century, the skills and knowledge of their respective crafts were a source of identity and pride. This book uses photographs to show two processes fundamental to creating a new society: the transformation of swamp into farmland then cityscape, and the transplantation of the knowledge and skill acquired in the Old World that were essential to building a new world. Soft Covers. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Reprint. This history covers a dramatic century for NZ, its original inhabitants and the arriving European settlers. At the time it opens there had been very little contact between Maori and Euopean, but this was to change very rapidly with the newcomers well established by 1840. The book begins with a reconstruction of pre-European Maori society, then follows the colonial, political, military developments, and the interaction between the two races. Land issues, which led to conflict, are studied, as are the factors that quickly changed NZ to a European style society. All aspects of this development are covered in the imposing text on the country's formative first 100 years. First printed 1989 with this reprint the following year. 433 pages including bibliography, index, art. photos, maps, graphs ect throughout. Card covers generally VG although front is creased on lower corner, few other creases, few marks and light edgewear, light wear to spine top. Text block is generally VG but there is underlining in ink and pencil with margin marks. This is mostly at the front of the text. No other inscriptions. Art, Photos, Maps, Graphs Etc (ilustrador).…

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. A good tidy copy with some light spine creasing. This book is a visual and narrative history of two communities, Māori and Pākehā, during a hundred years of settlement in New Zealand. It reveals how the two cultures saw their history through very different eyes: for Pākehā, it was a story of establishing an 'English island' in the Pacific; for Māori, a tale of loss and exclusion. But by setting out these conflicting understandings of the past, the book also seeks to bridge cultural differences through the sharing of knowledge. Written by three leading historians and lavishly illustrated, it is a stunning presentation of New Zealand's history.…
