In the early 1830's he was among Russia's most popular writers, ranked in stature not very far below the two literary giants, Pushkin and Gogol', and his eager quest for encyclopedic knowledge earned him the cognomen the 'Russian Faust.' Odoevsky's major work, one of great importance in Russian intellectual history, is his Russian Nights, first published in 1844. It is a fascinating novel that represents the summation of his views in many fields, an app roach to the all-embracing system he constantly sought. The range of problems and questions raised by the characters and illustrative stories is enormous: the boundaries of knowledge, the meaning of science and art, the sense of human existence, atheism and belief, education, government rule, the function of individual sciences, poetic creation, Slavophilism, Europe and Russia - to name only the most important.
