Lee's footage, shot between August and October 1972, when the film was suspended for Lee to work on Robert Clouse's "Enter the Dragon" (1973) and Lee died before returning to the film. Six years later Clouse would flesh out a feature around Lee's footage with a new cast, using stand-ins for Lee when needed. Billy Lo (Lee) is threatened by a racketeering syndicate after gaining international success as a martial arts movie star. When Lo refuses to be intimidated by henchman Steiner (O'Brian) and his thug, boss Dr. Land (Dean Jagger) orders his assassination. Based loosely on the events of the 1861 Bascomb Affair and the 1862 Battle of Apache Pass, during which Native Americans first encountered howitzers and other modern artillery after the reigning Union government breached several existing treaties and sparked a conflict that resulted in 25 years of Apache unrest. Chandler's second performance as Cochise, following "Broken Arrow" (1950). From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s.
