Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. In this edited collection, contributors analyze how the media is navigating Africa's most populous nation, Nigeria, and its mediated democracy. Despite its constitutional role, recognizable as the fourth estate of the realm, the Nigerian media has a history of confronting daunting challenges headlong. This book captures an array of the challenges faced, from British colonialism and military rule to democratic dispensation. Ordinarily, democracy is purposefully streamlined to elevate freedom of expression to an inalienable right and a necessary corollary of democracy. Yet, media freedom in Nigeria has been tortuous and nebulous, and there is a paradoxical difference in how the state relies on the media for partnership while also obstructing accountable journalism that would hold the state and the media itself accountable. The editors provide a poignant outlook of the onerous interactions and dialectics of media and democracy, and the cascading state power. Contributors argue for open democratic deliberations, civic space, and freedom of the press, all rooted in public good. Scholars of journalism, political communication, media studies, African studies, law, democratic studies, and political science will find this book of particular interest.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book explores how the media, and journalism in a cross-disciplinary sense, has treated conflictsin Nigeria, West Africa and the Sahel.Contributors connect theoretical foundations with practical experiences in the study of media, conflicts and national security, seeking to unravel the mediated and communication logic(s) in news coverage and analyse the media's role in pre-conflict, in-conflict and post-conflict discourses. The work maps out the impact of mediated narratives on security, risk, terrorism, banditry and general society, relying on local, on-the-spot and ontological cultural experiences in Africa, especially Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and other parts of West Africa.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This is the outcome of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Faculty of Arts Conference on the 2023 General Elections in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges which took place between 27-29 June 2023.The Nigerian 2023 General Elections came with high expectations especially with the introduction of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the passing into law of the Electoral Act 2022. The persistent assurance of both the Presidency and the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) of transparent electoral process encouraged mass participation during the election. The gloomy economic situation in the country, insecurity in the form of kidnapping for ransom, terrorism also heightened people's desire to enthrone good governance through active participation in the electoral process. The Nigerian youths who have been on the margin of economic malaise appear to 'take back their country' through social media mobilization in the 2023 general elections. Unfortunately, the outcome of the elections appears disappointing and considered to be the worst since the return of Nigeria to democratic rule in 1999. The manner the Judiciary handled electoral petitions felt below minimal standard and thus exacerbated more problems for democratic experiment in Nigeria. Election indeed has no meaning. 252 pp. Englisch.
